2012 in review: SGN picks the hottest artists of the year

by Albert Rodriguez and Jessica Price - SGN A&E Writers

In a year that saw dozens of breakthrough artists - fun., Alabama Shakes, Miguel, and The Lumineers, to name a few - these are the performers (in ranking order) who created headlines, topped the charts, sold out world tours, put themselves on the map, got better with time, or simply stood out from the rest.

1. TAYLOR SWIFT
A crossover superstar with commercial and artistic success, Swift was everywhere in 2012, including at the very top. -A. Rodriguez

2. ADAM LEVINE
He's a singer, actor, reality show judge, and Gay marriage advocate. And he's totally hot (in case you haven't noticed). -A. Rodriguez

3. RIHANNA
We won't fault Rihanna for running back to ex Chris Brown, so long as she keeps cranking out more hits. -A. Rodriguez

4. PINK
Staying true to her style, Pink added another chart-topping album and hot single in 2012 to her already killer catalog. -A. Rodriguez

5. MADONNA
Who cares if MDNA references Abe Lincoln, when she's more fabulous on her ninth world tour than on her first? -J. Price

6. FRANK OCEAN
This rap artist is as notable for his debut album, Channel Orange, as for publicly opening up about loving a man. -J. Price

7. LANA DEL REY
Though she took a critical beating, the torch singer's popularity and army of dedicated fans proved overwhelming. -A. Rodriguez

8. MACKLEMORE
Seattle's hottest rapper entered at No. 1 on iTunes independently, while 'Same Love' calls out hip-hop for willfully ignoring equality. -J. Price

9. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
Wrecking Ball delivers what the Boss does best, coupled with a critically acclaimed tour showcasing him in top form. -J. Price

10. FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
Ceremonials came out in 2011, but Flo toured the world throughout 2012 (including a life-altering performance at White River Amphitheatre). -J. Price
