Everyone's a winner at the Miss Community Pageant

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Move over, stuffy drag pageants - there's a new pageant in town and this one is all about the community. On December 23, five queens vied for the title of Miss Community at R Place, and nobody left a loser. Each contestant won money for their favorite charity or nonprofit.

Competing in the Miss Community Pageant, which organizers hope will become an annual tradition, were Eve Evita Zahara Aulelei (Zahara); Mulan Rouge-Bradshaw (Mulan); Sister Domine Trix of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, The Abbey of St. Joan; Iyona Dior-Black; Tailyn Howe, and Victoria Love.

The pageant's creator, La Saveona Hunt (Miss Nubian Pride 2012-13), hosted the show along with Dominic Vs Dom Dior (Mr. Nubian Pride 2012-13) and DonnaTella Howe (Miss Gay Seattle 2012).

Contestants were judged by local activist and drag superstar Aleksa Manila, Marion Malena (Miss U.T.O.P.I.A. 2012-13, Avia Moliga (Miss A/PI 2012), and a special guest judge from Portland.

GIVING BACK
As the reigning Miss Nubian Pride, La Saveona Hunt is required to hold a fundraiser for the community. So she decided to do a pageant - with a twist!

'The community supports drag queens year-round, so I want to give back to them,' La Saveona Hunt said. 'This pageant, titled Miss Community Pageant, is a little different because the money the contestant wins does not go into their pocket. Instead, it will go to a nonprofit of their choice.'

'And as an added bonus, no matter what place a contestant is awarded, they will win some money for their nonprofit too,' she said. 'In other words, everyone walks out a winner!'

The pageant was scored 40-60: 40% by the judges and 60% by audience response.

STARS COME OUT
There were guest performances, too. Entertaining the audience while contestants got ready for the next category of competition were the hosts, the judges, Jessica Paradisco and Jared You, Ceasar Hart,Olivia LaGarce, Fraya Love, and Regine Dynasty St. James.

The pageant had its rules and different categories - everything that normally goes along with a drag contest - but the feel of this event was not one of fierce competition (although the competitors did bring their A game!) but community and a sense of giving back. It really seemed the appropriate event before Christmas.

Seattle Gay News would like to congratulate first runner-up Mulan Rouge-Bradshaw and the first Miss Community, Eve Evita Zahara Aulelei!
