Strange bedfellows - Eliot Spitzer's madam runs for mayor of New York

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Kristin Davis, who grabbed headlines in 2008 when she revealed she ran the prostitution service patronized by New York's then-governor Eliot Spitzer, was endorsed by the Queens Libertarian Party as a candidate for mayor of New York City on January 12.

The Queens chapter is reportedly the largest Libertarian group in New York City, and Davis has described herself as 'a natural Libertarian.'

Before running one of New York's highest-priced sex businesses, Davis was a hedge-fund manager, and allegedly used her connections to attract blue-chip call-girl clients like Spitzer and International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

Davis claims she fingered Spitzer, leading the FBI to get a federal wiretap warrant that led to the governor's downfall. He resigned his office in March 2008, amid calls for his impeachment.

RAN FOR GOVERNOR
In 2010, Davis ran for governor of New York on the Anti-Prohibition Party line, but came dead last with only 20,000 votes out of more than 4.7 million cast.

As the standard-bearer of the Libertarian Party, Davis says she will repeal many of the 'nanny state' initiatives of current Mayor Michael Bloomberg, especially his restrictions on soda sales.

'Kristin's campaign is not a joke or a publicity stunt,' her campaign website says. 'This is a campaign about real reform. New York is becoming a Nanny State ruled by legislators who believe that they can make personal and private decisions for its citizens.'

Davis also promises to use her hedge-fund experience to monitor financial transactions.

'I recognize that hedge funds are a large part of the financial market and have the capability to influence market conditions,' she told Absolute Return website.

'As mayor, I would want to work with the hedge funds to ensure compliance with SEC rules and to find a level of transparency that works for the funds and their investors to increase trust of the funds and markets.'

The odds-on favorite to succeed Bloomberg is New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. If Quinn is elected, she will be the first openly Lesbian mayor of New York.
