Looking for a 'brief' encounter?

Check out SOSea's beauty pageant with a twist

by Daniel Hanks - SGN Contributing Writer

Miss America meets Magic Mike at Social Outreach Seattle's upcoming fundraiser, 'Brief Encounters with JUSTUS,' scheduled for Thursday, February 28, at Neighbours Nightclub (1509 Broadway), from 9 to 11 p.m.

Five contestants will model JUSTUS designer underwear, and one will be chosen by a panel of judges to reign as 'Commander in Brief' and represent the JUSTUS Clothing Company in Seattle. Pre-sale tickets will be available online starting Monday, January 28, for $15 at www.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets will be available at the door for $20.

HELPING THE HOMELESS
The JUSTUS Clothing Company, which specializes in designer men's underwear, has launched the '1-4-1 Program' to benefit those in need.

Whenever a customer purchases any item on the company's website, a new pair of underwear is donated to a homeless shelter on that customer's behalf.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, there are 633,782 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States and 50,000 of those are homeless youth. Sadly, up to 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ, and these youth face seven times the likelihood of violence as their straight peers.

JUSTUS officials say they only work with shelters that share the company's 'JUSTUS-4-All' philosophy - those dedicated to a world that doesn't discriminate against people based on their race, color, religion, age, orientation, or gender.

THE GREAT EQUALIZER
Phil Elam and Mike Boila, co-owners of JUSTUS, say they want their men's underwear products to be a symbol of hope and equality.

'At JUSTUS, we are truly passionate about making a positive difference in our community and we are thrilled that our clothing line can help in such a meaningful way,' said Boila. 'Our aim is to spread the message that we are all the same at the most basic level.'

So how did they arrive at the decision to donate underwear to homeless shelters?

Elam and Boila say the idea came during a visit to a local shelter for runaway teens. Shelter officials told the pair that most people who donate clothing stick to pants, jackets, and shirts. The clothing item that they saw the most need for - underwear - wasn't easy to come by.

At that moment, Elam and Boila said, they realized that underwear is something we all take for granted. Clean underwear is one of life's basic necessities. So they took immediate action, making a donation of underwear to the shelter - and have been donating new pairs of JUSTUS underwear to homeless shelters across the country ever since.

Elam and Boila, longtime friends, started the JUSTUS Clothing Co. in 2002 as a progressive-minded clothing supplier for men and women. The JUSTUS online store (www.justusclothing.com) features hip briefs in camouflage and solid colors, trunk briefs, standard boxer briefs, and athletic jocks along with T-shirts, hats, wristbands, belt buckles, and more.
