Gollllll-ly! Jim Nabors marries his longtime partner in Seattle

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Actor-singer Jim Nabors, who won fame for his TV character Gomer Pyle, married his longtime partner, Stan Cadwallader, in Seattle on January 15.

Nabors and Cadwallader live in Honolulu but traveled to Washington state to be legally married, reported Hawaii News Now on January 29. The couple met in 1975 and have been together since then.

'I'm 82 and he's in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years, and I'm not ashamed of people knowing - it's just that it was such a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody,' Nabors told reporters.

'I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy.'

Nabors said he was always openly Gay with friends and co-workers, and there was always Hollywood gossip linking him to other male celebrities - Rock Hudson, in particular - but he was never outspoken about it.

'I'm not a debater,' he told Hawaii News Now, 'and everybody has their own opinion about this and actually I'm not an activist, so I've never gotten involved in any of this.'

DISCOVERED BY GRIFFITH
Nabors began his show-business career as a singer. When he worked cabarets, he also added a comic performance featuring a character that evolved into Gomer Pyle.

Andy Griffith discovered Nabors working at The Horn tavern in Santa Monica and signed him to play a one-episode role as a silly but lovable auto mechanic on The Andy Griffith Show. The character turned out to be such a hit that Griffith made Nabors a regular on the show.

In 1964 CBS starred him in a spin-off, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. That show, which lasted five seasons, featured Nabors as a Marine Corps private, playing opposite Frank Sutton as his irascible sergeant.

For many years, he and Cadwallader ran a macadamia nut plantation in Hawaii, before selling it to a conservation group and retiring to Honolulu.
