Former Utah governor Huntsman supports full marriage equality

Former Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman voiced support for same-sex marriage this week, reversing a position he held during the 2012 campaign. In an op-ed piece posted online by The American Conservative, he urged his fellow Republicans to be supportive of Gay and Lesbian couples, saying such support was 'consistent with the Republican party's origins.'

'I've been married for 29 years. My marriage has been the greatest joy of my life,' he wrote, in an essay titled 'Marriage Equality Is a Conservative Cause.'

'There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge that same relationship with the person they love,' he continued.

BACKED CIVIL UNIONS
As governor of Utah, Huntsman supported same-sex civil unions. After announcing his presidential bid, he backed off the issue, telling a reporter, 'I don't think you can redefine marriage from the traditional sense.'

Widely regarded by pundits and party insiders as too moderate to win the nomination, Huntsman dropped out of the 2012 race after a third-place finish in the New Hampshire primary. He recently was named a visiting fellow at Harvard University's Institute of Politics.

Nine states plus the District of Columbia and two Native American reservations have legalized same-sex marriage, and legislative campaigns for marriage equality are under way in several other states - though not Utah.
