Singing for salvation - Altar Boyz will alter your view of Catholics

ALTAR BOYZ
SEATTLE MUSICAL THEATRE
Through March 10

Altar Boyz is a great musical for SGN readers to see. If you've been hankering for hot guys shaking their hot bods boy-band style, and singing and dancing for God ... oh, you haven't? It's the God part, isn't it? Got you a little worried? Well, if you miss this show, you'll miss a hysterical satire featuring a quintet of traveling Catholic evangelists (yes, you read that right) who sing, dance, and try to save your soul.

The five local hot bods on stage at Seattle Musical Theatre are Matthew (Mark Tyler Miller), Mark (CJ Conrad), Luke (Eric Hagreen), Juan (Bo Mellinger), and Abraham (Jeff Orton). They're all pretty good singers and under the choreographic direction of Troy Wageman, they dance their fannies off while squeezing every last double entendre out of lyrics such as 'God put the rhythm in me - put it, put it, put it!'

The 90-minute show is modeled on contemporary Christian rock concerts and most of the dialogue, on the surface, is similar to what you'd hear during a real church-style event. So, the fun is not in what they say, it's in how. It's hard to translate that into writing. Really, you have to be there to see and hear it.

Wageman has transformed the stodgy lakeside theater into a festival of rock-concert lights with the help of lighting designer extraordinaire Chris Frickland. There are more fixtures on that stage than SMT has ever had before, all at once. Sound designer David Torres makes sure the small band, led by music director Kimberly Dare, sounds great. Fun costumes by Betsy Rugg totally play into the boyz' hotness, with skin-tight pleather, headbands, and muscle Ts.

There are a lot of almost-Gay references with lyrics that nearly 'come out' but never quite get there. There is a special Sony soul-counter calculating how many are being saved, and of course, the goal is to have zero unbelievers by the end. Feel free to clap along and bounce in your chair. The music is catchy and the lyrics are funny. Your religious grandma, however, would probably not be amused. For more information, go to www.SeattleMusicalTheatre.org or call (206) 363-2809.
