Bellevue, Washington, resident Ryan Manabat and his partner of nearly 10 years, Christopher Quach, recently did something extraordinary. The two men traveled to Fundación Hogar Dulce Hogar (Home Sweet Home Foundation), an orphanage in Mexico City, to donate clothing, money, and love to children in need.
'There are 70 children living in the orphanage ranging in age from five months to 17 years old,' Manabat said.
According to the couple, Fundación Hogar Dulce Hogar does not receive government support and is fully funded by donors. Between them, Manabat and Quach raised $2,000 (25,000 pesos).
The goodwill trip, Manabat says, was inspired in part by the Mahatma Gandhi quote, 'You must be the change you want to see in the world.'
'WANTED TO TAKE HIM HOME'
Unfortunately, when they arrived they were told that most of the kids had taken a day trip to go swimming, so they were only able to meet about 20 who had stayed behind. But Manabat says that gave them 'a chance to truly spend some quality time with the cute toddlers and the youngest member, Emiliano, who is only five months old!'
'He was so adorable, I just wanted to take him home,' said Manabat.
'We hope to do this every year, God willing,' he continued. 'I'm thinking perhaps Brazil next year?'
The two men also collected 100 pounds of children's clothing. However, they found out too late that the Mexican customs agency prohibits importation of used clothing.
'We will be shipping them instead to another orphanage in the Philippines,' said Manabat.
Manabat and Quach asked Seattle Gay News to remind readers that 'it's never too late to help. You can always donate or sponsor a child.'
