Rihanna set to sparkle at Key Arena

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

RIHANNA
KEY ARENA
April 3

If memory serves me correct, Rihanna hasn't performed in Seattle since April 2008, when she opened for Kanye West at Key Arena. This time, she's the star attraction. The Barbados-born singer has exploded in the past five years with a consistent string of chart-topping albums and hit singles, propelling her to worldwide fame and putting her on a very short list of female artists who can play to sold-out sports arenas. She's as big a success story as Lady Gaga.

But, as is usually the case, a superstar career also has its setbacks. The infamous altercation with on-again-off-again beau Chris Brown just before the 2009 Grammy Awards made headline news and indefinitely put RiRi under the microscope, a situation made worse when she subsequently reunited with the R&B titan. Don't ask me to explain. Further disappointment came in the form of box-office failure, when her debut film appearance in Battleship sank along with the movie's lousy ticket sales and even worse reviews.

Still, she's a survivor. And a pop queen - a very busy pop queen. She's been going nonstop for nearly 10 years now, releasing new material faster than we can get tired of her old stuff. Her latest CD, Unapologetic, is nearing platinum status, having sold more than 806,000 copies as I write this. The album features the international smash 'Diamonds,' which gave Rihanna her 12th number-one single and which has already been certified double-platinum. The music video for the single has been viewed more than 240 million times on YouTube as of this week.

The 'Diamonds World Tour,' descending to the Emerald City on April 3, is said to include 27 songs that highlight her chock-full portfolio, although a few very early hits are not expected to be on the set list. Seattle fans lost an opportunity to see Rihanna at White River Amphitheatre in 2010, when she axed the North American leg of her 'Last Girl on Earth Tour' due to production issues and never rescheduled the date. She then omitted us from the 'Loud Tour' two years ago. Bottom line: the girl has some making up to do.

Tickets for Rihanna at Key Arena were still available at press time. Go to www.livenation.com or stop by any Ticketmaster location. A$AP Rocky is booked as the supporting act.
