Joan Osborne interview next week in SGN

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Grammy nominee Joan Osborne will speak with Seattle Gay News next week, ahead of her four-night residence at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley. The New York-based artist is scheduled to play her first shows at the downtown venue on April 18-21 with The Holmes Brothers serving as back-up band. Osborne catapulted to mainstream attention in 1995 when her single 'One of Us' drew as much critical acclaim as it did controversy, mostly from conservative idiots who misinterpreted the song as poking fun at God. It was the leadoff track from one of that decade's most superb albums, Relish, which also featured 'St. Teresa,' 'Spider Web,' and 'Ladder.' And though her popularity with the mass public gradually declined after that, she continued releasing extraordinary work such as 2000's Righteous Love and 2002's How Sweet It Is. The latter of these two was a collection of soothing cover songs with love and peace themes, a post-healing project inspired by the events of 9/11.

Her newest offering, last year's Bring It On Home, received a Grammy nomination for Best Blues Album. A longtime ally of the LGBT community, Osborne excitedly shared her thoughts on Washington state's recent passage of marriage equality during our interview. She also previewed her Seattle concerts - she's playing seven shows over four consecutive evenings - and talks about what she loves to see and do in our city. Don't miss your chance to see this outstanding performer at Jazz Alley! Reservations can be made at www.jazzalley.com or by calling (206) 441-9729 (the Saturday 7:30 p.m. show is close to selling out). And grab a copy of SGN on April 5 when Joan Osborne goes one-on-one with us.
