Seattle: Not great for grads?

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

According to Forbes, only 40% of graduates from the top 100 schools in America are able to find work in their chosen field, with fully half landing positions that don't require a degree at all.

But how long does it take for a hopeful graduate to give up on dreams of gainful employment after receiving their diploma? Seven weeks, on average.

SeekingArrangement.com has released the results of its study on recent grad memberships and its rankings of the 20 worst cities for new grads, naming Seattle the seventh-worst in the country.

Since 2009, the website has shown an unusual spike in the month of June, for new members between the ages of 21 and 24. Based on a series of entry polls, SeekingArrangement.com discovered that the majority of new members in June were newly minted female college graduates. The poll also revealed that 30 percent of new college grad members come from 20 cities in particular, making them the 20 worst cities in America for new graduates, according to the website.

The 20 worst cities for new grads, based on new grad membership figures for June 2012 and 2013, are as follows:

1. Philadelphia (1,089); 2. Sacramento (954); 3. Detroit (827); 4. Washington, D.C. (791); 5. New York (653); 6. San Francisco (525); 7. Seattle (519); 8. Phoenix (504); 9. Baltimore (424); 10. Atlanta (407); 11. Columbus (398); 12. Los Angeles (350); 13. Salt Lake City (342); 14. Tampa (317); 15. Raleigh (305); 16. Louisville (295); 17. St. Louis (274); 18. San Jose (262); 19. Chicago (261); 20. Austin (256).

'Every student exits college at the beginning of May full of hope and eager to start working,' says Brandon Wade, founder and CEO of SeekingArrangement.com. 'By June, graduates who have yet to land a job in their desired fields have very few options open to them - settle for less pay than they deserve, or settle for a job they don't want.'
