Solid gold - Out singer-songwriter Matt Gold keeps it real

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

You simply cannot talk about emerging singer/songwriters without mentioning Matt Gold, the out Gay breakthrough musician from the Midwest whose music is gaining ground worldwide.

Gold began to make a name for himself playing original compositions on college campuses and at small venues before releasing his first album, Drown Before You Swim, in 2012. According to a media release, 'Drown Before You Swim' sold briskly on iTunes and Facebook. It ranked in Amazon.com's Top 20 Adult Contemporary music downloads for weeks and is continuing to earn rave reviews from bloggers, critics, and fans. '

'I am a perfectionist in the studio and out,' Gold told SGN. 'I set very high standards for myself.'

HITTING CLOSE TO HOME
Known for his haunting lyrics and soaring melodies, Gold has a plaintive voice that complements his musical compositions with lyrics that strike deeply into the listener's life.

'A lot of the songs on Drown were about personal relationships and even friendships that had left me hollow,' Gold said. 'The songs were about trying to figure out the right way to go about healing, whether it is in your personal or professional life. How we pick and choose our path, and the reasons behind it.'

Gold spent the early part of this year in Los Angeles recording a new album with Grammy-winning producers Kenny Aronoff and David Bianco. He anticipates releasing his new album this summer.

The song 'Void' is about the damage that occurs emotionally after a breakup and how it leaves you feeling empty and lost. 'I wrote this after my last relationship and found it really hard to rise back into everyday life as I knew it,' Gold says. 'While the song comes from a place of sadness and despair, when I was recording the track I felt an anger that I had forgotten existed. Mostly the frustration of losing something I could no longer sustain.'

The new album, Gold continues, 'mostly deals with wanting love and needing love and sometimes finding love.'

'I think people resonate with my music because it's blatantly honest.' he adds. 'At the end of the day I don't want to decompress to a dance song. I want, and I hope others want, something that truly can mend their sadness and let them know they are not alone in what they are dealing with.'

DIVERSE INFLUENCES
Gold told SGN he grew up listening to alternative bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Radiohead. 'I seem to gravitate towards the dark, edgy side of music but lately have found myself interested more in electronic/trance music such as Massive Attack, Swedish House, and other various DJs.'

But the artist he admires the most is in a league all her own: Tori Amos.

'Tori Amos and I have the same ears - I always felt like she might be my long-lost aunt,' he said. 'I definitely have always felt a strong connectivity with her music.'

Unlike Amos, Gold readily admits he hasn't conquered the piano. 'I only had piano training for one month before I quit in frustration,' he explains. 'I hate being told to play what's on the page. I like taking a song into another territory that's not written down.'

THE MUSIC SPEAKS FIRST
Matt Gold is a proud Gay man. However, he says, he is an even prouder musician. 'I really feel that while being out is something I have never hesitated about sharing, the music is first and foremost with me, before my sexuality,' he told SGN. 'I don't see myself as a 'Gay artist.' I just see myself as a musician trying to make a go of it.'

June is LGBT Pride Month, and while he celebrates the annual Gay holiday, he believes, 'Gay Pride to me means believing in yourself, believing in your cause, and striving to present a positive message to the community.'

'I do this because I believe we all have a purpose,' he continued. 'Mine was to make people feel and understand and give them something to commiserate with. If I hadn't had music growing up, it's hard to tell where I would be today.

'My family knows about my sexuality and thinks being Gay is not 'God's plan for me.' My friends know, and many of my fans most likely know. However, with that being said, my purpose has always been to let the music speak first. If you don't like me based on my sexuality, then I probably don't want you as a friend or a fan.'

USE YOUR ADVERSITY
As for his younger fans, Gold wants them to know, 'I believe it does get better. I have found in my life that the adversity I have tolerated only made me want to push further and be more successful. I never wanted to give into someone's predictions of what I could or could not do or become.'

Gold says that although he's never had the chance to visit Seattle, 'I am greatly intrigued by all the good things I hear. I'm sure it will be a stop on my tour at some point. I get excited about all the different coffeehouses and restaurants the city has to offer.'

Gold's latest video supports his song 'Void.' You can view the video on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2DiEpeI1p4&feature=youtu.be.
