Don't send us a 'faggot' ambassador, cardinal tells Obama

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

In a press conference on June 29, Roman Catholic Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said that James 'Wally' Brewster, who is openly Gay, would not be welcome as U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

Brewster is one of six openly Gay men that President Obama has nominated for ambassadorial posts. Conservative religious leaders and other opponents of LGBT rights have called on Dominican President Danilo Medina to refuse to accept him if he is confirmed.

'You can expect anything from the United States,' Lopez said contemptuously. He then accused Obama of trying to 'push an agenda' by nominating Brewster.

'HE IS GOING TO SUFFER' br /> Later, the cardinal referred to Brewster as a maricon, a word usually translated into English as 'faggot.'

Lopez's assistant, Monsignor Pablo Cedano, then added, 'I hope he does not arrive in the country because I know if he comes he is going to suffer and will have to leave.'

Cedano said it showed 'a lack of respect' that Obama 'sent ... a person of this kind as an ambassador...'

However, a Dominican government official said it would be 'indelicate' to reject Brewster if he is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. In fact, Cesar Pina, a legal adviser to the Medina administration, said the Dominican Republic signed off on the nomination before it was publicly announced.

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy, Daniel Foote, said on June 28 that 'Brewster arrives as an ambassador - he's not coming here as an activist for the Gay community.'
