Love, marriage, mystery, and politics - Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera The Gondoliers has it all

THE GONDOLIERS
BAGLEY WRIGHT THEATRE
July 12 - 27

One of Seattle's oldest performing arts groups, the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society, celebrates its 59th season with 11 performances of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers (or The King of Barataria).

The play is full of bubbly Italian and Spanish-style music by Arthur Sullivan. W.S. Gilbert's contributions include some charming and very funny lyrics for the songs (several of which are sung in Italian), as well as his usual biting satire regarding some long-established institutions including the church and the monarchy. There are the traditional Gilbert & Sullivan love complications and a mystery as to who is the real King of Barataria, which is revealed in the last moments of the show.

In addition to the clever lyrics and beautiful music, there is lively Flamenco-style dancing by the entire on-stage cast of 40 accompanied by the Society's 28-piece orchestra.

MARRIAGE MIX-UP
The plot involves Venice's two most eligible bachelors - brothers and gondoliers - who select their wives and get married early in Act One. There follows the arrival of the (penniless) Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro, with their beautiful daughter, Casilda. They reveal to her that she was married in infancy to the son of the very rich King of Barataria. They have come to Venice to see the Grand Inquisitor, who knows where the King is, and claim their daughter as the Queen of Barataria.

The Grand Inquisitor knows 'for sure' that the King is one of the two gondoliers, but he isn't sure which is which. He is shocked to find out that they have both run off and gotten married, and he tells the newly wedded gondoliers that one of them is an unintentional bigamist.

As Barataria is in a state of insurrection, the two 'Kings' must go there at once (without their wives) to rule as one individual until the Grand Inquisitor can unravel who the real King is. All is revealed and unraveled in Act Two.

STELLAR CAST AND CREW
Producer Mike Storie, stage director Christine Goff, and music director Bernard Kwiram have brought together an outstanding cast for The Gondoliers. Authentic Spanish choreography is provided this year by Maria Gitana, owner and principal dancer of Flamenco Gitana. Nathan Rodda designed new magical sets of Venice (with two gondolas) and the royal palace in Barataria. Jon Allbritton created the stunning costumes.

Unique in the Gilbert & Sullivan canon, The Gondoliers has 17 named characters. The principals are Scott Bessho, Stacey Porter, Derek Sellers, Rachel Brinn, Hayley Gaarde, Rachel Nofziger, Derek Hanson, Craig Cantley, Miranda Troutt, Dan Dupertuis, Breanna Edwards, Dante Castelli, Emily Robinson, Gene Ma, Rebecca Maiten, Ron Gangnes, and Ryan Glascock. The cast also includes two preteen performers, and the show is eminently suited for young people.

The Gondoliers opens on Friday, July 12, and runs through Saturday, July 27, at the Bagley Wright Theatre in Seattle Center (155 Mercer St.). Performance dates, which include three Saturday matinees and two Sunday matinees, are July 12-14, 19-21, and 26-27. Friday Family Nights feature discounted tickets, a Q&A session with the actors, and a backstage tour after the show. The last time the Society performed The Gondoliers was in 2003.

Tickets are $40 for the general public; $16 for those under age 18. Discounts are available on Fridays and for senior citizens. Visit www.brownpapertickets.com or call 1-800-838-3006 for tickets.

ABOUT THE SOCIETY
The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society is a nonprofit, community arts organization whose funding is provided by member donations, ticket sales, and local grants. It is dedicated to performing the works of Gilbert & Sullivan and others to the highest artistic standards, and to offering family entertainment at affordable prices.
