La Femme and La Femme Plus pageant contestants announced

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On July 21, Neighbours Nightclub (1509 Broadway) will host the 2013 Seattle La Femme and La Femme Plus Pageant sponsored by Darcelle XV, Gaysha Starr, and Sinfinite Productions.

What makes the La Femme Pageant one of the most well attended drag events of the year is that the contestants have to be drag queens and not transsexuals. According to pageant officials, this can prove to be challenging and entertaining during the four categories: Formal Wear, Theme Wear: Pirates of the Seven Seas, Talent and especially during the Las Vegas Showgirl portion of the evening.

The winners and first runners up for each title will go on to represent Seattle at the International Pageant on September 1 at the Oregon State Convention Center hosted by Northwest drag legends and pageant founders Darcelle XV and Roxy La Roy.

In the 31 year history of the pageant only six of the International Winners have been from Washington: Coco Vaughn (Tacoma 1986), Gaysha Starr (Seattle 1994), La Vanda Dela Rosa (Seattle 1996), Lily Armani (Seattle 2010), Chablis (Seattle 2011) and Athena Kiss (Plus Tacoma 2011).

'With drag today being so heavily influenced by RuPaul's Drag Race and so many different forms of artistry, it is commendable that La Femme has stood the test of time for over three decades,' says Washington State Pageant Producer and International Winner Gaysha Starr.

Starr, who relocated to Aspen, Colorado earlier this year and will return to Seattle to host the pageant, continues, 'It's not always about being 'the most real' or 'most fish'. It's about glamour, showmanship, and consistency. We tell the celebrity and industry judges to look for that before the pageant.'

Adds another International Winner, Coco Vaughn, 'If the winners use this opportunity wisely, she can go on to compete in other national pageants like Miss Gay USofA, Miss Gay America, Universal Showqueen, raise money and awareness for the LGBTQ community and grow both in and out of drag.'

The five contestants vying for the titles and over $1,000 in cash and prizes are for La Femme: Amora Dior Black, La Saveona Hunt, and Nikki Saxxs, and for La Femme Plus: LaTrina Bidet, and Vivian LeCher.

To pass down their titles and crowns will be 2012 winner Diamond St James Blaque and Beyonce Blaque St James. To add to the evening will be performances and appearances by former La Femmes and special guests.

Cost of the event will $18 at the door and partial proceeds will benefit the Seattle Quake Rugby Team. For more pageant information email gaysha@gayshastarr.com.
