No drama here - Fitz and the Tantrums' Noelle Scaggs isn't letting fame get in her way

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS
THE SHOWBOX SODO
August 9

The hardest thing for any new band is to get noticed. And once you do get noticed, the challenge is to keep everyone's attention. Fitz and the Tantrums seem to have leaped over both of these hurdles. The Southern California pop-soul outfit began their emergence around two years ago, shortly after forming in 2008, but within the past 12 months they've really gained traction with three hit singles, a sophomore album, and sold-out shows across the country.

But for group vocalist/percussionist Noelle Scaggs, the journey hasn't been a short one. 'It happens organically,' she explains by phone in a quick chat. 'It's been a very organic process for us. It's not like we shot up to the sky.'

She credits all the band's success to the fans. 'It's really exciting for them to keep supporting us,' she states, with exuberance in her voice. 'There seems to be this magic, this connection they have with us.'

LOVE FOR SEATTLE
Among the followers of Fitz and the Tantrums are many who reside here in the Emerald City. 'Seattle has always been good for us,' notes Scaggs. 'It was supportive early in our career. We've done really, really well there. We sold out The Showbox [Market], which was a really amazing thing for us.'

Seattle folks probably got their first glimpse of the six-piece act when they opened for Hall & Oates at Bumbershoot a couple years back. 'It was actually pretty rad for us,' recalls Scaggs. 'We got to play on Hall's show before that (the Live From Daryl's House web series). 'Sara Smile' is one of my favorites. It's one that is always played at the dentist's office, or in the elevator, or on the way to the dentist.'

More Than Just a Dream is the latest work from Fitz and the Tantrums, featuring the smash single 'Out of My League,' the music video for which has already surpassed one million viewers on YouTube. The band has been promoting the new album with headlining dates and appearances on Bruno Mars' summer tour. They'll go to Europe in October. From More Than a Just a Dream, the sextet plans to introduce seven or eight songs from it on this current road outing.

'SWEATY DANCE PARTY'
On the list of upcoming concerts is an August 9 appearance at The Showbox SoDo, a slightly bigger venue than their previous visit to Seattle. Fans should expect a very enthusiastic performance.

'It is definitely a sweaty dance party,' says the 33 year-old singer. There is a lot of energy, a lot of movement. We're kind of like the band that doesn't do rehearsals. We like to just go out and play. We try to keep it as simple as possible, but it's always fun. We try to play around 90 minutes.'

Tickets for Fitz and the Tantrums, priced at $26.50 advance ($29.50 at the door), are available through www.showboxonline.com.

Scaggs isn't letting fame go to her head. When I caught up with her, she was going about her normal routine. 'I'm actually at Trader Joe's in L.A. right now. It's the only time I can get things done,' she states.

So, what's in her grocery cart? 'Today, I'm keeping it simple,' she replies. 'Got some fruit, some salad items, and raisin bread.'
