Time to roar! - Miss Yara Sofia returns to Seattle for Leo Party X

by Ken Campbell - Special to the SGN

LEO PARTY X
NEIGHBOURS NIGHTCLUB
August 11

Brace yourself, kiddies, for while it may be Monsoon season in Seattle, there is yet another tropical storm on the way. Miss Yara Sofia, a third-season contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race, is coming to Seattle for an exclusive appearance at Leo Party X!

For those of you who are unacquainted with Miss Sofia, this Puerto Rican power princess held her own all the way up to episode 13 before being eliminated in an emotionally charged lip-sync contest against fellow contestant Alexis Mateo and claiming the position of fourth runner-up. But this was not the last we were to see of Yara Sofia. During the reunion special, which aired on May 2, 2011, Yara won the annual Miss Congeniality award. Then, on August 6, 2012, it was announced that Yara had been selected as one of 12 past Drag Race contestants to join the cast of RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race, which premiered on the Logo network last October. Teamed with former rival Alexis Mateo to form 'Team Yarlexis,' the duo was eliminated in the series' fourth episode, giving them a third-place finish. Since then, celebrity has kept Miss Sofia very busy and ever on the move making appearances. Prior to her scheduled arrival in Seattle this Friday, I was able to pitch a few questions via text message to Yara Sofia down in Los Angeles.

SGN: Will this be your first visit to Seattle?

YS: No, I went there a few years ago. I was performing at Julia's on Broadway.

SGN: How did you like Seattle?

YS: I love Seattle! It's very different from L.A. especially when it comes to the weather. In L.A. it never rains. I think I've seen it rain 10 times over the last three years that I've been here. Before L.A., I lived in Puerto Rico, where it rains a lot. I'm kind of a survival person. Rain or shine, I love Seattle.

SGN: Any plans to see Jinkx Monsoon while you're here?

YS: Well, I haven't talked to her but I would love to get coffee with her at the very least while I'm there. She's AWESOME!!! I'm a fan.

SGN: Has your life changed very much since RuPaul's Drag Race?

YS: The show changed everyone's life. It made my moving to L.A. a lot easier.

SGN: How so?

YS: It was easier for many reasons. I didn't know anyone when I got to L.A. but thanks to Drag Race everyone already knew me, so I had work instantly and was able to pay my rent. If it weren't for Drag Race I would have had to compete in amateur pageants for people to see me doing what I was made to do. Also, there are a lot of Latins, mostly Mexicans, here in L.A. who support me so they can have Latin representation here in the West. I'm the only Puerto Rican here, though, so I'm one of a kind.

SGN: What was the most important lesson you learned by being on the show?

YS: That being myself is the key to success. Nobody can do Yara Sofia better than I can. I'm unique. I learned how to be a better me.

SGN: So what do you have in store for Seattle while you're here?

YS: A spicy, CRAZY Caribbean show that anyone of any age would enjoy and would for sure be entertained by!!

SGN: What lasting impression of Yara Sofia would you like to leave on Seattle or any other city you visit?

YS: There's no doubt I'll come back to most of the places I visit. My focus is to portray an edgy, wacky, fashion-forward, inspirational and, most of all, unique drag persona. I can please any crowd - young, old, Latin, Gothic, classy, anyone who appreciates the art due to my versatile style!

SGN: What's in store for the near future? Any more television appearances planned?

YS: I have been shooting episodes for a few upcoming reality shows on different TV stations like VH1 and OWN, but I can't give any details due to confidentiality contracts. But I will say that I have something REALLY big coming up, so keep your eye on Yara Sofia!

SGN: Any parting words for your fans?

YS: I thank everyone who has supported me and followed me on social media. I am deeply appreciative of all their love.

Yara Sofia will be appearing at The Leo Party X on Sunday, August 11. Also appearing will be Jujubee with Aleksa Manila, Roxy Doll, and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, as well as a gaggle of hot go-go boys to provide some eye candy. Doors open at 6; show starts at 8. Leo Party X is a benefit for Seattle Counseling Service. Tickets are available at http://leopartyx.brownpapertickets.com.
