SoCal porn industry shuts down again - Two more performers test HIV+, including boyfriend of Cameron Bay

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The Los Angeles-based porn industry shut down on September 6 after two performers tested positive for HIV.

The Free Speech Coalition and Performer Availability Screening Services (FSC/PASS), a trade organization that represents porn producers, announced its second production moratorium in as many weeks.

An August shutdown followed the announcement that female performer Cameron Bay had tested positive for HIV. Production resumed at the end of August, when Bay's co-workers all tested negative.

On September 3, however, Bay's real-life boyfriend and fellow porn performer Rod Daily tweeted that he, too, had tested positive. On September 6, an as-yet-unnamed performer also tested positive for HIV, and FSC/PASS responded by halting production.

According to industry insiders, Bay did mainly hetero porn and last worked on July 31. Daily, on the other hand, was known as a Gay porn performer. He is said to have filmed at least two Gay scenes in August, plus one with a Trans woman and one hetero scene.

ASSURANCES GIVEN
According to Dr. Sean Darcy, one of the FSC/PASS medical advisors, no additional infections should result from the newly reported HIV cases.

'Because of these precautionary steps, the performer who has now tested positive for HIV had not performed since before the first moratorium and was prevented from performing due to the required retest,' Darcy said.

'Therefore, no performers were exposed to a new risk of on-set transmission as a result of this latest case, or Ms. Bay's infection.'

According to Peter Acworth, CEO of Bay and Daily's employer, Kink.com, Daily took appropriate health and safety precautions at work.

'We can say with some degree of confidence that there was no transmission on set,' Acworth said. 'Rod Daily wore condoms in all his scenes. The strong indication is that Rod contracted it [off-set] and transmitted it to Cameron Bay.'

According to SF Gate, however, Kink.com requires only Gay performers to wear condoms, while hetero performers do not.

IT'S THE LAW
In November 2012, Los Angeles County voters approved a new ordinance requiring all porn performers to use condoms on set. A federal district court upheld the ordinance on August 17, although Judge Dean Pregerson indicated that some of the enforcement provisions were unconstitutionally broad.

California Assemblyman Isadore Hall III has introduced legislation for a similar requirement to be adopted statewide.

HIV testing for porn performers is mandatory every 28 days, but some industry executives now favor tests every two weeks.
