Georgia officials reject newlyweds' name change request

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Even in post-DOMA America, LGBT couples are still fighting to have their relationships recognized.

One such couple, Danielle McCollum and Shakira Tucker, got married in Massachusetts this summer. Upon returning home to Atlanta, the two women wanted to share their last names and start their new life as a family. Shakira was able to change her name on her driver's license using their marriage certificate from Massachusetts with no issue. But when Danielle went to the same Department of Driver Services office and showed the same marriage certificate, she was turned away.

After facing rejection from her home state, Danielle launched a campaign on Change.org asking the Georgia DDS to let married same-sex couples change their last names on driver's licenses.

'There are thousands of married same-sex couples like me and Shak living in states where our marriages are illegal - and we must keep working until all same-sex couples have equal rights and protections,' said Danielle. 'Because the Supreme Court overruled the Defense of Marriage Act, Shak and I can change our passports, Social Security ID cards, and credit cards, and even file joint tax returns. It just doesn't make sense that we can do all these things, but we can't have the same last name on our driver's licenses!'
