Jason and Mark to adopt? Thinking about a new addition to the family

by Mark Segal - Philadelphia Gay News

With all the politics in the air, I think it's time to change the subject and bring some warmth back to a civil society. So with that, Jason and I have decided to talk about welcoming a new member to our family. Specifically, we're talking about adopting a puppy.

Many of you know we used to have two Boston terriers. Moshe and Sadie were a joy to behold. And after long and loving lives, they left us about two-and-a-half years ago, within six months of each other. Our lives have been a little emptier since.

We're both animal people, but it has taken us this long to finally be in a place to consider welcoming a new member into the house. We're also two busy people and trying to bring up a puppy with our schedule is a little tough, since they need and deserve time and patience. Luckily for us, as soon as we started making sounds that we were open to opening our home and hearts, friends and co-workers realizing our time restraints jumped in to offer to assist when we need puppy-sitters and more. This moved the needle from 'considering' to the reality of 'when' we would actually do this.

So, now that the decision has been made and we're looking at the calendar to figure out when, it's beginning to look like spring, after the opening of the John C. Anderson LGBT-friendly senior apartments. Now we're down to only two questions:

First, what breed? We like the idea of a small dog, like a French bulldog, but we also like the idea of a Labradoodle. So we're debating the pros and cons of each, and who knows, someone might suggest another alternative.

Also, what do we name her? We've had some fun playing that game with our friends. Don't know about you, but as I wrote this, I felt that cozy, warm, fuzzy feeling that allowed me to totally forget the problems of the universe.

That is the best advertisement for family that I know.
