SLGFF 2013 announces Jury and Audience Awards

by Gail Benzler - Special to the SGN

The Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (SLGFF) ended its 18th run October 20 and announced its Jury and Audience Awards at the Closing Night Gala. The festival is produced by award-winning nonprofit Three Dollar Bill Cinema and presented by Xfinity.

'I'm thrilled that we exceeded our attendance and box-office goals,' said Jason Plourde, Three Dollar Bill Cinema's executive director. 'More importantly, audience members raved about the quality and fun of this year's festival, and filmmakers from around the globe commented on this being the best film festival they've ever attended. That kind of feedback makes me very proud and grateful to the staff and volunteers who make our festival so successful and respected.'

Attendance figures for SLGFF broke all previous records. The festival had eight sold-out shows, notably the Opening Night screening of I Am Divine, the stunning period piece Reaching for the Moon, and the unique live performance Return to Grey Gardens.

JURY AWARDS
Juried award-winners receive the following cash prizes: $1,000 for Best Narrative Feature and Best Documentary; $300 for Best Short Film and Most Innovative Short Film.

Best Narrative Feature: Reaching for the Moon
For the historical depth in the telling of Elizabeth Bishop's life, while remaining an emotionally personal film - the combination of the captivating storytelling lovingly photographed and superb acting of beautifully flawed characters. This film offers an honest portrait and a glimpse into a history where Lesbian relations are often erased.

Honorable Mention/Narrative Feature: Getting Go: The Go Doc Project
A scrappy, innovative film that brought a unique artistic expression to sex as politics where charming and surprising characters come of age.

Best Documentary: Mr. Angel
Both daring and sentimental, outrageous and totally human, Mr. Angel is a revelation.

Honorable Mention/Documentary: I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole
An inspiring tale of reinvention and of an influential but widely unrecognized artist.

Best Short Film: Natives
We award Natives for its beautiful technique, tight writing, and great acting, and even more for its authentic and nuanced depiction of how Queer relationship and family dynamics are affected by deeper issues of race and oppression.

Most Innovative Short Film: Cologne
Cologne uses gorgeous and masterful technique to combine disparate elements of music, classical dance, and a unique storyline for a powerful lot of storytelling in 12 minutes. And c'mon ... Dolly Parton!

Special Award for Multimedia or Live Event: Return to Grey Gardens
For its perfectly acted, hilariously creative homage to the Maysles brothers' masterpiece.

AUDIENCE AWARDS
Favorite Narrative Film: Reaching for the Moon
Favorite Documentary Feature: I Am Divine
Favorite Gay Short Film: Spooners
Favorite Lesbian Short Film: The Devotion Project: Foremost in My Mind
Favorite Transgender Short Film: Dating Sucks: A Genderqueer Misadventure

'We congratulate all the Jury and Audience Award winners and thank every filmmaker who was a part of the 18th Annual Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival,' concluded Artistic Director Keith Bacon.
