Patty Murray challenges Boehner to pass ENDA

By Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

At a November 8 press conference on Seattle's Capitol Hill, US Senator Patty Murray challenged Republican House leaders to bring ENDA to a vote.

Murray, a cosponsor of the legislation since 1994, was one of 64 Senators who passed the bill November 7. Republican House Speaker John Boehner says he opposes ENDA and will not bring it up for a vote.

Noting that the Washington state legislature passed LGBT protections in 2006, Murray said the equality 'is something Washington state already does well.'

'My Republican colleagues and Speaker Boehner somehow think it's too hard or that it will create problems,' Murray continued. 'I'd like to invite them to Washington. If Speaker Boehner came to Seattle he would find a thriving community of LGBT families going to work and enjoying all the benefits of equality.

'We did our part in the Senate. I call on Speaker Boehner to take this bill up and pass it!' Joe Adams, CEO of First Commerce Bank which hosted the event, noted in his introduction of the senator that his bank - with seven branches and 150 employees - had 'zero issues with the [state] law and no extra expenses.'

Other speakers included Charlene Strong, now a member of the state Human Rights Commission. GSBA executive director Louise Chernin, and Seattle Civil Rights Office outreach manager Jacque Larrinzar.

Larrinzar said that legal protection was vital to LGBT workers. As a Lesbian, she said, 'I have experienced discrimination - and I am a professional - I have been denied housing and I have been denied work.'

In response to a question, Sen. Murray said that if Republicans failed to pass ENDA in the House, 'people will look at the House of representatives and ask 'What are they doing to protect the American people?' They stalled the Violence Against Women Act, they passed a Farm Bill that doesn't provide food stamps for the neediest Americans...'

Chernin said the GSBA and other, similar LGBT chambers of commerce would probably take up ENDA at a national meeting in March 2014.
