Let's make merry - Andy Bell talks about Snow Globe, Erasure's new holiday album

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

It's been a long, long road for Erasure - and it's not ending anytime soon. The British dance-pop duo of Andy Bell (openly Gay, partnered) and Vince Clarke (straight, married) have been professionally recording music for nearly 30 years since launching their career back in 1985 with the single 'Who Needs Love Like That.' Bigger hits, such as 'Oh L'Amour,' 'Sometimes,' 'Chains of Love,' and 'Love to Hate You,' followed soon thereafter. Erasure releases their first full-length holiday-themed album, Snow Globe, on November 11, just in time for everyone to listen to as they prepare for the year-end festivities. I got a hold of Bell by phone on Halloween night as he was preparing to go party-hopping in London, and here's what we chatted about inside The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: Were you and Vince in charge of all the arrangements for these songs?

Andy Bell: Yes, we did the arrangements. We seemed to create a real brilliant atmosphere for the songs - we kind of just gave them this feeling of being in the snow and being in the cold. It felt like a scene from Evita, or the film It's a Wonderful Life - that kind of atmosphere.

Rodriguez: Are there any plans to perform these songs live?

Bell: We're going on tour next year. It'll be September by the time we're on tour, so hopefully we can fit a couple of them in along with our other Erasure stuff.

Rodriguez: Will you include Seattle on your tour?

Bell: I hope so. I was just there this year for a solo show.

Rodriguez: A tour is planned for next year. What's being planned for the remainder of 2013?

Bell: Through the end of this year we're promoting Snow Globe, so hopefully we've got a couple of TV shows lined up. I just did a performance for Children in Need, which is a charity, but we're doing two shows on the BBC next year, called 'CarFest.'

Rodriguez: Are you a big holiday person?

Bell: Um, I don't know. I think it's a lot of work for just one day. I like decorating the house a bit. The last few Christmases, I've been in Miami. It's a bit weird, like being an ex-pat abroad. One of my hobbies is collecting snow globes, the ones that go up on the tree - I love those. Every time I travel around, I buy one to bring back, so we've got all kinds of them, and space ships, and all kinds of things.

Rodriguez: Will you spend Christmas and New Year's in Miami?

Bell: Yes, I'll be back again in Miami. We'll probably be up north in Melbourne Beach, because that's where my partner's mother lives, and his sister.

Rodriguez: Great Britain recently passed a Gay marriage bill. Did you celebrate that in any way?

Bell: We didn't celebrate it, but we've had a civil partnership this year already in January. I think they caught on to something quite lucrative here because Gay people are getting married all over the place.

Rodriguez: Have you been booked for any Gay wedding receptions?

Bell: I have, yeah. I sang at a wedding in New York for the guy who runs Fab.com [pauses, trying to think of his name]. Oh my gosh, my mind's gone blank. [Remembers] It was Bradford Shellhammer and his partner. A great fun event!

Rodriguez: Describe Snow Globe for us. What will we be listening to?

Bell: I think it's akin to living inside a music box, and I'm the ballerina. This music sounds to me like laser beams of sound coming off a glittery disco ball - it's very twinkly and very snowy.

Rodriguez: So people can dance to this as they're decorating the tree.

Bell: They can do that, yeah.

Rodriguez: Is there any particular song on this album that's your favorite?

Bell: I love 'Make It Wonderful' and I love our version of 'Gaudete.' But my favorite tracks are 'Silent Night' and 'Silver Bells.'

Rodriguez: When you go on the road next year, will you be touring another new album?

Bell: Well, we are speaking about a new Erasure album in the pipeline, which we are going to write for. But I'm not sure we'll get it all in, finished, and released before the tour, so we'll just have to see.

Rodriguez: Are there wedding bells in your future?

Bell: I hope so. We put our names down for 2016 in Florida, so hopefully we'll be able to wed there and I'll be able to come in and out of the country as I please.
