Murray announces transition team leaders

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Losing no time after incumbent Mayor Mike McGinn conceded the election, Seattle Mayor-elect Ed Murray announced the co-chairs of his transition team on November 7.

To head the transition, Murray chose his longtime ally, former City Council member Martha Choe, and King County Budget Director Dwight Dively. A statement issued by the Murray campaign said both will participate 'in a personal capacity.'

Choe, currently chief administrative officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, served on the City Council from 1992 through 2000. Murray got his start in politics as her legislative aide and has remained close to her throughout his career. She is said to be one of the key allies he consulted when making his decision to run for mayor.

Dively is director of the Office of Performance, Strategy, and Budget for King County, and previously served for 16 years as Director of Finance for the City of Seattle.

In 2009, newly elected Mayor Mike McGinn demoted Dively, sending him to supervise the city's fleets and facilities. He quit the city soon afterwards, going to work for County Executive Dow Constantine.

'I am deeply honored that Martha and Dwight have agreed to take on this important role,' Murray said in a statement. 'Martha gave me my first job in public service, and I still consider her a mentor. And Dwight is universally acknowledged to be one of our region's foremost experts on issues of governance and budgeting.'

Murray said he, Choe, and Dively would move quickly to form a full transition committee, which Murray pledged will reflect the diversity of the city. They intend to announce the full committee next week.

Murray will take office on January 1, and Choe and Dively, 'working closely with Mayor-elect Murray, will lead the effort to evaluate city department directors and organize and staff the mayor's office,' Murray's campaign said.
