Thankskilling the Musical is pretty goddamn funny!

THANKSKILLING THE MUSICAL
BALAGAN THEATRE
CORNISH PLAYHOUSE STUDIO
Through December 14

If Thanksgiving heartburn made you think your turkey was killing you, well, maybe it was! At least the murderous turkey that Balagan Theatre has on display at Cornish Studio - that's the black box space behind the 'old Intiman' Playhouse. If you're a big fan of turkey, or the 'SAW' movies or 'Evil Dead,' you're in luck. You can see Thankskilling the Musical - the musical that even has its own drinking game embedded in a song!

Apparently written in three days, maybe even during a drunken stupor, Thankskilling the Musical is by Jeff Thomson and Jordan Mann, two award-winning musical writers, and David Eck. This is not their award-winning musical! However, it is dangerous, filthy, cliché-ridden, stupid, bare-bones ... and pretty goddamn funny! It's probably even funnier if you play the drinking game (for a mere $10) along with the show.

The cast includes the Jock (Kody Bringman), the Nerd (Evan Hildebrand), the Hick (Evan Woltz), the Slut (Lindsey Larson) and the Virgin (Larissa Schmitz) on Thanksgiving break from school, and they are unaccountably being stalked by a murderous Turkey (Jeff Orton)! With Brian Lange, your host for the evening, along with a half dozen other very quick changes into all the other sundry characters in the show, this game cast (pun intended) mines the depth of the show.

This helping of mash is directed by the eccentric mind of Douglas Willott, an improv specialist who has some pretty fun ideas about simple, silly choreography, as well. While there are a few moments of timing slowdowns, most of the musical prances appropriately along. Piano is all they need for this show, provided by the tinkly stylings of Chris Ranney.

This offering was going to be a late night show, rather than a main stage one, until a change of plans in Balagan's schedule. (It's only a little over an hour long and is most appropriate for the late night slot.) Don't take it seriously, don't sit in the front row with really good clothing on, and have a great time!
