More live concerts fill Seattle's spring calendar

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Here's the latest batch of live shows headed to Seattle:

Jazz legend Terrence Blanchard will appear at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley on February 20-23 for a quadruple night residency with a full band (billed as the Terrence Blanchard Sextet).

Folk-rock artist Mason Jennings, who interviewed with Seattle Gay News several years ago, will perform an acoustic concert February 27 at The Triple Door.

Multi-saxophonist and Seattle native Kenny G is scheduled to play Dimitriou's Jazz Alley on four consecutive nights, March 6-9.

Former Best New Artist-Grammy winner Paula Cole ('Where Have All the Cowboys Gone') is sliding into The Triple Door on March 19, while indie rock act and critical favorite Bastille is appearing April 8 at The Showbox SoDo.

There is a show cancellation to report. Unfortunately, singer-songwriter Jake Bugg has canceled his January 20 appearance at the Paramount Theatre. No rescheduled concert date was mentioned at press time.

It's time to release your inner Elvis! That's right, if you've ever fantasized about impersonating the rock and roll icon, then your glittery jumpsuit dreams have come true as EMP (Experience Music Project) hosts the 2014 Seattle Invitationals on January 11. The event allows fans to perform an Elvis song backed by an actual band (pre-registration is required) and takes place at Sky Church, inside the museum, with admission of $15 advance and $20 day of show. This event is for those 21 and over only. Go to www.empmuseum.org/calendar for more information, or sign up at www.SeattleInvitationals.com.

Kudos to the Barenaked Ladies for canceling their February 15 concert at SeaWorld, after watching CNN's documentary Blackfish. 'This is a complicated issue, and we don't claim to understand all of it, but we don't feel comfortable proceeding with the gig at this time,' the Canadian group addressed its fans via social media. Blackfish, which aired on the cable news channel weeks ago, tells the story of a killer whale kept in captivity under unusual conditions that eventually led to an aggressive attack on a marine park trainer.

You snooze, you lose. These live performances are now sold out: Chance The Rapper on December 15 and Panic! at the Disco on January 14, both at The Showbox SoDo.

Finally, I'm headed this weekend to the Beyonce concert in Phoenix. She isn't coming here, so I'm going there. 'The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour' touches down at US Airways Center in downtown PHX on December 7 to a sold out crowd, and I'll have a full review of the performance in next week's issue of the SGN.
