LGBT officials meet for leadership conference

In 1984, the first International LGBT Leadership Conference was held; attended by approximately two-dozen elected officials. Conference attendees estimated there were fifty out LGBT officials in the whole world at the time. Today, there are more than 1,000 out officials around the globe; and they are on the front lines in the fight for equality.

The 29th annual International LGBT Leadership Conference, also known as LGBT Leaders 2013, kicked off in Denver, CO yesterday, with an opening night reception at the McNichols Civic Center. The Conference will continue through Sunday, December 8. Nearly 600 attendees from ten countries are expected at the three-day event, produced by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute and hosted by Colorado House of Representatives Speaker Mark Ferrandino.

Though most attendees are U.S.-based, out elected officials and advocates from countries including Spain, Japan, Colombia, and Australia are set to participate.

LGBT Leaders 2013 will feature three tracks of programming for participants. Reaching Your Potential focusing on professional development, Reaching Consensus discussing current policy issues, and Reaching Equality providing briefings on the state of the LGBT movement. Important discussion topics for the Reaching Equality track include: 'Advocating for LGBT Elders,' 'LGBT Issues in U.S. Immigration,' and 'Justice in Jail: Policies Impacting Incarcerated LGBT People.' Other important topics include: 'Implementing the Affordable Care Act,' 'The National Landscape for Trangender Equality,' and 'Turning Point: Assessing the LGBT Movement Post DOMA.'

Speakers for this year's event include Harvey Milk Foundation Co-Founder & Board President Stuart Milk, MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, Rep. Mike Michaud (ME), Rep. Jared Polis (CO), Rep. David Cicilline (RI), Rep. Mark Takano (CA), and Rep. Mark Pocan (WI).
