Buika gives ravishing performance of Latin jazz

by Paul Torres - SGN Contributing Writer

BUIKA
THE TRIPLE DOOR
December 8

International music artist Buika (also known as Concha Buika) gave a ravishing performance December 8 at The Triple Door. The Spanish singer was supporting her latest album La Noche Más Larga, which has been getting stellar reviews. Five of her own compositions appear on her album along with collaborations with legendary jazz guitarist Pat Metheny.

Buika's music is a lovely mix of rhythmic beats and jazzy vocals with infusions of flamenco, soul, and hints of Afro-Cuban styles. La Noche Más Larga is currently nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. She also was nominated in 2008 for a Latin Grammy Album of the Year for her album Niña del Fuego. Her 2010 release, El Último Trago. won the Latin Grammy award for the Best Traditional Tropical Album. Her songs appear in Pedro Almodóvar's film La piel que habito.

Buika is a sultry, seductive, and passionate singer. Amongst the cushy ambience of The Triple Door, she is well-suited to emotionally express herself with her Spanish-language music. Even if you don't know Spanish, you know how she feels as her vocals soar and cry over the sparse and elegant piano and percussion arrangements.

Buika roused the crowd with her outstanding and lively 'Santa Lucia' song, calling and calling 'Santa Lucia! /Santa Lucia!' over and over again stirring the audience to whoops and hollers. Her deep and mournful vocal register expresses the depths of despair that comes after that last love and last drink. Her sexual prowess is expressed in her flowing gestures like her swaying hands moving down her gown and between the folds of her skirt.

Buika's songs are personal and introspective acts in the human drama of longing and broken hearts. Her exquisite version of Bonnie Raitt's classic 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is set to simple and haunting rhythms with her scat ad-libs. She brings this soulful song to new emotional places. Buika's sexy purrs and growls are reminiscent of Eartha Kitt, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald. She is their spiritual god daughter. And she's adorable! Every human emotion is totally expressed in a noche with Buika.
