'The Times, They Are A-Changing!'

by Sugie - SGN Contributing Writer

Bob Dylan wrote those prophetic words the year I turned 10 years old in 1964. Little did I know that 49 years later I would be writing on the topic of Gay marriage. I would like to point out that I am as straight as straight can be. I have a wonderful boyfriend and we are traveling on a good ship toward the future. My editor, George Bakan, asked me to write on the topic of Gay marriage, and at first, I drew a blank. I am all for people, of any sex, getting together for the sake of legalizing their love. I used to tell people that I was 'hopelessly heterosexual.' Now, I would tell them I am heterosexual, yet hopeful for the Gays in the future.

As I was growing up in the swinging sixties, I read as an adolescent, 'Ann Landers Talks to Teens about Sex.' There was a chapter on Homosexuality. Basically, it said, some people choose one lifestyle over another, and no one knows why, whether it's environment or hereditary - something in one's genes. All I know is that my parents raised me to be open-minded, and I had my first 'steady' at age 12!

Anyway, even though I might be in the minority, I like to see Gay people happy, and if that is what makes a Gay couple happy by saying their wedding vows, so be it!

I would imagine that if my own mother were still alive, she might challenge my position on Gay marriage. I would say to her, 'Mom, everybody deserves a chance at happiness, be they heterosexual or Gay.'

I believe the wedding aisle is wide enough for everyone. So I challenge all of you straights out there - think before you speak and pray before you act. (I got the previous slogan from an Alanon meeting, where one goes if one lives with an alcoholic.)

My InStyle Magazine reported on the wedded bliss of the T.V. star Neil Patrick Harris and his lover and their new twins that populate their household. So, if major magazines can talk openly about Gay couples, then the world must be opening a new door slowly. Some people open their doors faster than others. I can only speak about my own door, which is wide open for change with hopes that other straight people will follow suit.
