We traveled thousands of miles on various airlines, slept in many foreign (but nice) beds, dined at dozens of restaurants, drank at lots of bars, and took in the sights and sounds of historical landmarks, tourist attractions and national treasures. From what we saw, ate and drank and where we slept, here's what we chose for the Best of Travel 2013.

HOTELS
1. Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort & Spa
Wailea, Hawai'i USA (Island of Maui)

The brand new Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort & Spa, which opened in September, is a huge hit with travelers and foodies alike. Top-notch style and service, all rolled into one. -J. Price

2. Arizona Biltmore
Phoenix, Arizona USA

This stately Phoenix property was one of Marilyn Monroe's favorite retreats. With updated renovations, pristine courtyard and a hotel within a hotel, the Biltmore is simply fabulous. -A. Rodriguez

3. Cedarbrook Lodge
Seattle, Washington USA

Five minutes from the airport is this hidden gem, a wonderful alternative to brand name Sea-Tac hotels, providing guests with cozy accommodations, acclaimed restaurant and 24-hour self-serve snacks. -A. Rodriguez

4. Conrad Seoul - Seoul, South Korea
In a city that raises the standards of modernity and sophistication, the Conrad Seoul is impeccable on all levels. Its luxurious rooms, stunning views and 30-foot high ceiling lobby are unforgettable. -A. Rodriguez

5. Le Saint James - Bouliac, France
Overlooking the city of Bordeaux, this contemporary and artsy hotel has its own private vineyard, outdoor pool and patio, and it offers cooking classes with the handsomest, wittiest chef. -A. Rodriguez

6. The Marker Hotel - Dublin, Ireland
Located in the redeveloped and now-hip Docklands district, this Dublin hotel boasts a chic interior and gorgeous rooftop lounge. -A. Rodriguez

7. RiverPlace Hotel, a Kimpton Hotel
Portland, Oregon USA

Situated on Portland's waterfront, this riverside property is the newest Northwest addition to the LGBT-friendly Kimpton brand of hotels and features trendy rooms, renovated banquet halls and central location. -A. Rodriguez

8. Rockwater Secret Cove Resort
Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia

Nestled deep in the forests of the Sunshine Coast, the Rockwater's tent suites with luxury furnishings are a breathtaking way to bond with nature. - A. Rodriguez

Old world charm, beautifully laid out, comfortable and centrally located in downtown Chicago. What else could you ask for? - E. Andrews-Katz

10. The Westin Phoenix Downtown
Phoenix, Arizona USA

A retrofit concept - a hotel within a corporate building - this Westin is unlike any other; a stylish and cool property in the heart of downtown Phoenix with amazing city views. -A. Rodriguez

RESTAURANTS / BARS & LOUNGES

1. 37 Dawson Street - Dublin, Ireland
A polished restaurant-lounge in a bustling Dublin neighborhood that categorizes its menu with theater themes - curtain call, opening acts, encore, etc. The ambiance is energetic, food is delicious and setting is welcoming to everyone. -A. Rodriguez

2. Andrea's - Las Vegas, Nevada USA
This popular Encore-Wynn restaurant serves some of the best Asian food I've had in recent years, surprisingly, in a sleek dining space. -A. Rodriguez

3. The Barking Dog Restaurant
Belfast, Northern Ireland UK

A terrific neighborhood eatery in Belfast's Queen's Quarter with flavorful dishes, great local beer, a surrounding of cheery locals and warm ambiance. -A. Rodriguez

4. Browns in Town
Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland

Familiar favorites executed wonderfully. My roasted quartered chicken with sweet corn risotto and steamed rice pudding earns an A+ across the board at this upscale, yet comfortable, Derry restaurant. -A. Rodriguez

5. The Chandelier
Las Vegas, Nevada USA

A multi-level lounge with live music stage on the main floor, plus an innovative cocktail menu and sexy mixed crowd, makes this Vegas hotspot really sinful. -A. Rodriguez

6. Copperleaf Restaurant & Bar
Seattle, Washington USA

Ambitious meals under the helm of James Beard-nominated Executive Chef Mark Bodinet and an intimate dining room with friendly, conversational staff won me over easily. -A. Rodriguez

7. Drink & Drag
Las Vegas, Nevada USA

A bowling alley, bar and dance floor run by drag queens ... in Las Vegas. If that doesn't spell a good time, tell me what does! -A. Rodriguez

8. The Exchange Restaurant
and Wine Bar - Derry/Londonderry,
Northern Ireland UK

Big portions of everything is what to expect at this central Derry dining attraction that suits both locals and visitors alike. The sauteed garlic mushrooms with cream sauce was almost too indulgent, and I'm not complaining. -A. Rodriguez

9. The Gladly - Phoenix, Arizona USA
Every item I ordered - the original chop salad, roasted Brussels sprouts, meatloaf, buttermilk bread pudding - was absolutely divine. -A. Rodriguez

10. The Handlebar Tempe
Tempe, Arizona USA

A bike-themed pub on Tempe's main street with 48 beers on tap, savory snacks and enthusiastic atmosphere. An outdoor beer garden and unique decor completes the fun experience. -A. Rodriguez

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS/ RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND SPAS

1. Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm
Kula, Hawai'i USA (Island of Maui)

This incredible ten-acre farm and garden is home to protea plants as big as your arm and 55,000 lavender plants in over 45 varieties. It's the blissed-out happy place where you'll return in your head again and again after your vacation is over. -J. Price

2. Art Institute of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois USA

World class collection of Impressionists. The best collection outside of France. -E. Andrews-Katz

3. BATHHOUSE (at THEhotel)
Las Vegas, Nevada USA

An excellent Sin City spa with super high ceilings, tiled floors, large hot tubs, reading/TV nook and spacious men's restooms and relaxation area all tucked inside THEhotel, tucked inside Mandalay Bay. -A. Rodriguez

4. Book of Kells - Dublin, Ireland
Although half of this ancient manuscript, said to contain the actual four gospels, is on display at all times it's still a piece of history that ought to be seen when visiting the Irish capital. -A. Rodriguez

5. Butchart Gardens
Victoria, British Columbia Canada

These gardens are yearly tended to show off the best Mother Nature can offer. Catered to fit the seasons, the grounds are expertly kept and invite those wishing to lose themselves in nature. -E. Andrews-Katz

6. Chicago Architecture Foundation
River Cruise - Chicago, Illinois USA

It's an incredible way to see the city. Enjoy a 90-minute tour along the river as a knowledgeable docent gives information about the incredible architecture that contributes to Chicago's skyline. -E. Andrews-Katz

7. Cycle City Tours
'Art Wheelers - Public Art Tour'
Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

Knowledgeable tour guides escort you through various parts of Vancouver, pointing out art installations along the way. Not only is it a cultural excursion, but it gives your legs a workout while inhaling the clean, fresh air. -A. Rodriguez

8. The Giant's Causeway
and Causeway Coast
County Antrim, Northern Ireland UK

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this natural wonder is worth the drive from Belfast or Dublin. I admittedly don't understand the history behind it - urban legend says it was created by an Irish giant - but, nonetheless, it was marvelous to take in. -A. Rodriguez

9. Guinness Storehouse/
The Connoisseur Bar Experience
Dublin, Ireland

The tour of Guinness' main facility, and particularly The VIP Connoisseur Bar Experience that allows visitors to sample many of their just-brewed lagers in a private room, is incredible. Even more exhilarating is the panoramic view at the Gravity Bar, accompanied with a complimentary pint after the tour. -A. Rodriguez

10. Heard Museum
Phoenix, Arizona USA

With over 40,000 items on display, the Heard Museum is a valuable resource for guests to absorb Native American culture and traditions. An immaculate courtyard and a gift shop stocked with locally made jewelry and crafts are not to be missed, either. -A. Rodriguez

Ka'ana Kitchen features an open kitchen whose centerpiece is a stainless steel Hibachi grill. Emeril Lagasse, Padma Lakshmi and other familiar faces from Top Chef were recently spotted here during filming. J. Price

12 L'Abattoir - Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

This nifty restaurant and bar in Van City's Gastown district is the perfect place to unwind with a reputable menu of French-inspired plates and skilled bartenders that concoct amazing cocktails. A. Rodriguez

13 L'atelier - Seoul, South Korea

With a Western-style menu - burgers, pastas, strawberry tiramisu, cappuccinos - this lively and posh Seoul diner within footsteps of the Leeum Museum will leave a lasting impression. A. Rodriguez

14 La Bocca Urban Pizzeria & Wine Bar - Tempe, Arizona USA

Nestled amongst rowdy college bars and fast food shops on the always-busy Mill Avenue is this upscale pizzeria that looks prententious and generic from the outside, yet inside is just the opposite. A. Rodriguez

15 La Rotonde - Biarritz, France

This Michelin-starred restaurant, a palatial circular dining room, is highlighted by fine Basque cuisine and mesmerizing ocean views with the best cheese selection anywhere. A. Rodriguez

16 Maui Brewing Co. - Lahaina, Hawai'i USA (island of Maui)

Maui's original island outpost serves delicious healthy fare, as well as traditional pub grub served up the Hawaiian way. Wash it down with their signature microbrews. J. Price

17 Quartino Ristorante & Wine Bar - Chicago, Illinois USA

Italian tapas-style restaurant. Small plates of pasta, cured meats, roasted vegetables, incredible desserts and a selection of Italian apertifs. E. Andrews-Katz

18 Raincity Grill - Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

Simple food done excellent is how best to describe this established restaurant across from Vancouver's English Bay, which uses regionally sourced meats, seafood, produce and pantry ingredients. A. Rodriguez

19 Simon Restaurant & Lounge - Las Vegas, Nevada USA

Servers wearing pajama bottoms, complimentary house-made cotton candy at meal's end and a large open space for brunch separates this Las Vegas restaurant from the pack. A. Rodriguez

20 The Violet Hour - Chicago, Illinois USA

This fashionable cocktail lounge taps into Chicago's Speakeasy past. The capacity is very limited, and the line outside starts early. Inside, high-back chairs instantly create a personal space - and cell phone usage is prohibited. The mixologists tending bar follow a strict recipe list insuring the perfect blend of liquor (count on at least a 2-oz. pour) and infused flavorings. E. Andrews-Katz

The filming location for dozens of movies and TV series, from Lost to Jurassic Park to Hawaii Five-O, this majestic mountainous attraction is also used annually for a 21K/10K/5K race in November. A. Rodriguez

12 Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art - Seoul, South Korea

This impressive museum in the hip Yongsang district features ancient ceramics and modern art pieces in a dinstinctively designed building with a stunning rotunda and outdoor terrace. It's a must when visiting Seoul. A. Rodriguez

13 LeMay America's Car Museum - Tacoma, Washington USA

Nearly 200 vintage automobiles are on display, dating back to 1906, inside a newly-constructed museum in Tacoma with 165,000 square feet of space that contains a theater, cafe and outside deck. A. Rodriguez

14 Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery - Kula, Hawai'i USA (island of Maui)

Perched atop 80 breathtaking acres of lower Mount Haleakala. Sample fresh sugar cane, sip vodka, and tour the family-owned, custom-built distillery. J. Price

15 Passion Cote Basque - 'Basque Country Touring 4x4' - Biarittz, France

Exploring the mountainous Basque country in a 4X4 SUV, including lunch in Spain, with a scenic landscape of cattle and sheep farms, sloping villages and espelette fields is a beyond excitable adventure. A. Rodriguez

16 Seoul City Hall - Seoul, South Korea

It might sound boring, though a visit to this futuristic-looking, multi-floor city hall is anything but. A stop at the cafe and escalator descent to the main level, where art exhibitions greet the public, round out the experience. A. Rodriguez

17 SNUBA (with Trilogy Ocean Sports Lana'i) - Lana'i City, Hawai'i USA (island of Lana'i)

While on Maui, try this combination of snorkeling and scuba that is safe for novices and tons of fun. Ask around - SNUBA is offered by any number of reputable Maui companies. J. Price

18 'Temptation Sundays' (at Oasis Pool, Luxor) - Las Vegas, Nevada USA

Shirtless gay boys in fashionable swim trunks? Check. Live DJ spinning Top 40 tunes? Check. Pool bar with sinful cocktails? Check. This is the way to have fun in the sun! A. Rodriguez

19 Willow Stream Spa (at Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel) - Vancouver, British Columbia Canada

Relieve jetlag or tired feet with a pampering 'Destination Rejuvenation' treatment at this downtown Vancouver spa, and afterwards soak in an outdoor Jacuzzi as you admire the lush natural scenery. A. Rodriguez

20 Woljeongsa Templestay - Pyeongchang, South Korea

If you don't mind going to bed at 9pm and waking up for a 4am meditation service, then you'll love this overnight Bhuddist temple experience deep in the Pyeongchang hills with actual monks. A. Rodriguez

TRANSPORTATION EXPERIENCE

1 Alaska Airlines, First Class - Seattle (SEA) to Atlanta (ATL)

Probably the best breakfast I've ever had in-flight - cinammon-apple scone, scrambled eggs, apple strudel, chicken sausage - and a garnished mimosa with personalized service restores my faith in domestic air travel. A. Rodriguez

2 Delta Air Lines, Business Elite - Atlanta (ATL) to Dublin (DUB)

Delta's improved meal options, in this case a four-course dinner with a superb roasted chicken entree and signature ice cream sundae, plus a loaded in-flight entertainment system and attentive service, made this a fantastic voyage. A. Rodriguez

3 Hawaiian Airlines, Economy Class - Seattle (SEA) to Kahului (OGG)

Vacation mode sets in quickly on Hawaiian's direct flight to Kahului - roomier seats with complimentary meal service and Mai Tai's included, and plenty of aloha spirit! J. Price

4 Korean Air, Prestige Class - Los Angeles (LAX) to Seoul (ICN)

An on-board cocktail lounge and Duty Free kiosk, plus six-course meal all inside a new A380 = wow! A. Rodriguez

5 Korean Air, Prestige Class - Seoul (ICN) to Seattle (SEA)

The Seattle-Seoul route still utilizes a 747 aircraft, and you can expect the incredible food selection, variety of entertainment and top notch hospitality from the flight crew as you would on the A-380. A. Rodriguez
