One-third of Americans reject evolution, Pew poll shows

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Next time you're having a drink at your favorite bar, look at the person sitting to your right. Then turn and look at the person to your left. Odds are, one of you will not believe that living species evolved from other life forms.

That's the conclusion of a new poll released by the Pew Research Center's Religion and Public life Project.

Thirty-three percent of Americans rejected the theory of evolution, saying that 'humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time,' while 60% agreed with the scientific consensus that 'humans and other living things have evolved over time.'

Men were more likely to accept the idea of evolution than women. Only 28% of men doubted that species evolved over time, but 38% of women did.

As you might expect, the best-educated respondents were the most likely to agree with evolution. Only 24% of college grads rejected evolution, compared with 38% of those who had a high school education or less.

Party affiliation was also a significant factor, with Republicans much less likely to agree with evolution than Democrats and independents. Nearly half of self-identified Republicans - 48% - rejected evolution, compared to only 27% of Democrats and 28% of independents.

Comparing this poll to a similar one done in 2009 reveals that Republicans as a group are growing more hostile to evolution. In 2009, only 39% of Republicans rejected the idea.

The intersection of race and religion also proved to be important. White mainstream Protestants showed the highest level of support for evolution, with only 15% rejecting the idea. White evangelicals, on the other hand, rejected evolution by a 64%-27% margin.

African American Protestants tended to reject evolution, with 50% saying that species have not evolved over time.

Catholics of all races seem willing to embrace evolution, with only 26% of white Catholics and 31% of Hispanic Catholics doubting the idea.

Among religious people who agreed with the theory of evolution, there were also important differences in how they envisioned the process. Hispanic Catholics, for example, were the most likely to believe that evolution was a natural process, as opposed to one guided by God.

Curiously enough, the few white evangelicals who accepted evolution were more likely to share this belief in natural - as opposed to divinely ordered - evolution, than mainstream Protestants were. White Catholics were evenly split on the question.

According to Pew, 1,983 U.S. adults participated in their poll, with 1,017 interviewed on a landline and 966 by cell phone. The calls were live, not prerecorded, and were conducted in English and Spanish. The margin of error is 3 points.
