BenDeLaCreme on RuPaul's Drag Race and around the town

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

These days BenDeLaCreme, the outrageously funny Capitol Hill drag entertainer, best known for Homo for the Holidays and her monthly party 'Tuck' at Chop Suey, is everywhere. Let's go down the checklist shall we?

TV? Check.
Currently, BenDeLaCreme stars as a contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 6, on LOGO TV. Since February 24, BenDeLaCreme acts as your hostess alongside local performance legend and Stranger Genius Award recipient, Sarah Rudinoff, as you watch the reality drag TV show that is in search of their next drag superstar at Century Ballroom. BenDeLaCreme gives all the behind the scenes dirt, dishing with Rudinoff and other special guests.

'Celebrate in the opulent grandeur of the Century Ballroom in the heart of Seattle's Capitol Hill Gayborhood,' reads the Facebook invite for the event. 'Take in subtleties of shade you never knew existed with our HD projector and 16 foot screen provided by A V Pro.'

To catch the show with BenDeLaCreme, just go to Century Ballroom on Mondays, doors at 6:30 p.m. and the show airs at 9 p.m. If you come early you can get a table and enjoy delicious food and drink from the Tin Table. The event is featuring Bacardi and Grey Goose cocktails. Century Ballroom is located at 915 E. Pine St. 2nd Floor. No cover! All ages!

Nightclub gig? Check.
Aside from making appearances at various parties around town, BenDeLaCreme enjoys a residency at Chop Suey producing Tuck, 'a gender bending dance party for kings and queens on the scene' where clubgoers are encouraged to dress as their interpretation of the changing theme. Tonight's theme is CAMP TUCK. And there will inevitably be bears, boy and girl (and gender nonconforming) scouts, and more.

YouTube web series? Check.
BenDeLaCreme has teamed with the award-winning writer/filmmaker Wes Hurley to star in the original web-series 'Capitol Hill,' - a 'Queer homage to '70s-'80s TV shows, starring Waxie Moon.' The team released the pilot episode this week and, if Facebook chatter has anything to say about, you'd already think the 'Capitol Hill' web series won an Academy Award. The truth is the team of Hurley/Moon is a winner; add BenDeLaCreme and you've got magic.

I could go on with the checklist, but honestly, it would completely take up the lot of our Arts & Entertainment section. The accomplishments of this drag queen go far beyond makeup and wigs and a dress. The absolute truth is BenDeLaCreme is funnier, more talented and just plain more enjoyable than almost any other entertainer doing what she is doing - entertaining audiences LGBTQ and Allied year-round with a smile. Always, with a smile.

Now, we don't know if BenDeLaCreme will follow in the footsteps of Jinkx Monsoon, who went on to win the Season 5 title as America's next drag superstar - but we can assure you that as long as we've got BenDeLaCreme in town - TV title or not - we've got something very special. She is a gem. And Seattle Gay News wishes her all the best with the show and in all the creative endeavors in her life.
