Teen queen: Lorde reigns supreme at WaMu Theater

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

LORDE
WAMU THEATER
MARCH 24

At an age when most kids are learning how to drive, Lorde is collecting Grammy Awards, earning platinum records and embarking on sold out world tours. The 17 year-old artist shot to superstardom last year on the strength of her mega single 'Royals' and debut full-length album, Pure Heroine.

The young New Zealander made her second appearance in Seattle within the past six months last week to a capacity crowd at WaMu Theater. Just after the 9 p.m. hour, and without any lead-in video or big introduction, Lorde simply walked out to the stage in a simple, yet classy, black gown and opened the show with 'Glory and Gore.'

Her presence is as infectious as her music. Her spastic dance moves are awkward to watch, but they were unique to the performance, and her humble and low key personality combined with an edgy, do-whatever-the-fuck-I-want-to style are difficult to draw your eyes away from.

'Seattle, I notice you have chairs. Don't use them,' said Lorde early in the concert. Everyone, at least those on the floor, did exactly as instructed and stood the entire time.

Supported only by a keyboardist-DJ and an electronic drummer, plus the backdrop of a gigantic gold picture frame broken in three fragments, the singer-songwriter glided wonderfully through a short set that included all 10 tracks from her international top-selling CD and a few extras, like a better-than-satisfiable cover of The Replacements' 'Swingin' Party.'

With Lorde, what you see is what you get. She sincerely told the audience that she loved being in Seattle, and validated her adoration with mentions of walking the city streets at her leisure and absorbing the urban views from a tall downtown building.

I was impressed at how well the Grammy winner commanded the stage, moving from side to side gracefully and acknowledging her fans with wide smiles; she doesn't have the star power of Beyonce or Katy Perry, or their explosive energy, but she packs her own fireworks - powerful low vocal range, weird interpretive dance arrangements, unorthodox yet catchy songs, Goth-meets-princess persona and a dare-to-be-different attitude. She certainly marches to the beat of her own drum.

'Team,' her newest single, was given a slightly extended version amidst a sea of pink lights, and climaxed with an exuberant final seconds. During 'Royals,' a grand chandelier right above the stage was illuminated. Lorde paused at the very last line of the chorus, staring directly at the crowd before singing the remaining words.

She closed the performance with a one-song encore and costume change, slipping into a gold metallic Goddess-like dress with a cape. 'A World Alone' brought the short, sweet 75-minute concert to an end.

Expect to see and hear lots of Lorde in the coming years, because she's just getting started.
