Harvey Milk stamp: Postal Service unveils final design

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The U.S. Postal Service unveiled the final design of a new stamp honoring Gay activist and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and announced ceremonies honoring Milk and the stamp.

The stamp image is based on a circa 1977 black and white photograph of Milk in front of his Castro Street Camera store taken by Daniel Nicoletta of Grants Pass, Oregon. Antonio Alcalá of Alexandria, Virginia, was art director for the stamp.

Milk, who was assassinated in 1978, is the first openly Gay American honored with a stamp. Although he was only in office some 11 months, Milk introduced and passed a landmark civil rights ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in San Francisco.

Before being elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Milk was a community activist in San Francisco's Castro District, which was then emerging as the center of Gay life in the Bay Area.

According to a press release, the White House will host the new Harvey Milk stamp's official first-day-of-issue ceremony on May 22. Postal Service customers can order stamps now for delivery after the May 22 ceremony.

On May 28 a special dedication ceremony will be held in San Francisco, although details on the time and exact location are not yet available.

Milk was honored posthumously with a Medal of Freedom award by President Barack Obama in 2009.
