A celebration of Kiki Sanchez' life

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Celebrated Seattle entertainer Jaime Enrique Mendez Alvarez, more commonly known as Enrique Mendez, died April 27 in Mexico. Mendez, who made a name for himself as a dancer in 'Le Faux' at Julia's on Broadway, also performed as Kiki Sanchez. He was the only person killed in a car accident when a truck he was the passenger in experienced mechanical failure and crashed Sunday afternoon.

Mendez leaves behind two sisters, his mother and father and, of course, all of us many friends and fans. He was 23 years old.

According to Colimanoticias.com, a Spanish language news and radio website (translated), 'Five people injured and one dead, was the outcome of a tragic car accident recorded around 1 p.m. in the afternoon on Sunday at kilometer 55 of the highway to Colima, Manzanillo, just short of a mile from the bridge that leads to Cuyutlán spa.

The report says the accident took place after a mechanical failure of the suspension of a Ford Ranger 96127 caused the driver, Daniel Álvarez Hernández , 42 years old, to veer off the road, resulting in the vehicle being overturned off the pavement.

After the strong impact, five people were discovered injured. Mendez died at the scene.

According to Colimanoticias.com, 'Injured at the scene were Brisa Alvarez Mendez, 17; Mayra Mendez Alvarez, 28; Sabina Alvarez Hernandez, 46; Pachuca Aurelio Luis Espinoza, 33, the latter is reported in serious condition; while the person who died in the accident is Jaime Enrique Mendez Alvarez, 23; all of them originating in Puerto Vallarta.'

News of Mendez' death hit hard. Kiki, as many who knew him on Capitol Hill called him, was a well-known entertainer with an enormous amount of friends. Messages of love and support began to appear on his Facebook page, as well as on the Facebook wall for Julia's on Broadway employees.

In light of his passing, Eladio Preciado announced that Julia's (300 Broadway Ave. E.) will hold a Drag Memorial Celebration of Kiki Sanchez' Life May 8 at 8 p.m.

'Please come and help us celebrate the amazing life of this beloved person,' said Preciado. 'Please come dressed in your best white outfit to honor his memory.'

According to Preciado, performers will honor Jaime Enrique Mendez Alvarez with some of his favorite drag performances.

In addition, the family of the deceased is said to be experiencing financial hardship as a result of the accident. A webpage to raise money to help offset the cost of funeral expenses and more, has been set up at http://www.gofundme.com/8rlo2o.

Alicia Salazar, the creator of the Go Fund Me page writes, 'Kike was one of the most genuine, caring, humble, honest, charismatic and hard working persons you could ever meet, with a passion for dance. He had a knack for making people smile, and he never let anything keep him from living life to the fullest. He was an inspiring person with goals and hopes. He touched a multitude of people in his short life.'

'Kike's family is going to need all of the help we can give them; they need us there for support and they also need us there financially, so let's please get together and raise Kike's parents the money they need,' continued Salazar. 'As his calling to the gates of heaven were unexpected, on behalf of the family we are asking for any type of help at this time. The last thing his parents need to worry about is expenses on a very unexpected heartache tragedy. From the bottom of my heart I thank you in advanced for all the support.'

Seattle Gay News would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Enrique 'Kiki Sanchez' Mendez.
