RICE BALL is official launch of Pride ASIA

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On Saturday, May 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the steering committee for Seattle's annual official Pride ASIA festivity will launch their Pride season with RICE BALL, a fundraiser and party at Neighbours Nightclub (1509 Broadway) produced in celebration of National Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month through a diverse perspective. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show is set to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online via: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/666441 for $20, or $25 at Neighbours on the day of the show.

Chase Silva, winner of Seattle Out & Proud's Pride Idol 2012, is scheduled to host the event alongside the current Miss United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance (U.T.O.P.I.A.) Seattle, Atasha Manila (also a current member of the official Pride ASIA committee).

The keynote speaker at the event is Norma Timbang.

Timbang is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker Associate who focuses on social identity development (e.g., people of color, LGBTQ, women, older women) and impacts of oppression, trauma (including sexual and intimate partner violence, hate crimes, harassment, workplace discrimination, and historical trauma) primarily incorporating relational, cognitive, psycho-educational, empowerment, mind/body/spirit, and other therapeutic practices. She also works with couples and groups to deepen their connections with each other through mindful interpersonal communication skills building and exploring meaningful ways to address and heal from conflict.

Timbang is a trained organizational and program development consultant working with health and human service organizations towards sustainability and accountability. Timbang has worked in non-profits, health care, human services, community development and organizing since the 1980s.

RICE BALL will feature special performances by Miss Gay Pride Alessandra Hunt, Miss Neighbours Anastasia Beaverhausen, Dakota, Jack Mozie, Lady Sahara, La Saveona Hunt, Miss Northwest Yahaira Rubi Arenas, Yee-shin Huang and more.

Pride ASIA's mission is to celebrate, empower and nurture the multi-cultural diversity of the LGBTQ communities through the APIA lens.

Pride ASIA is sponsored by Social Outreach Seattle and RICE BALL is sponsored by Seafood City and Neighbours Nightclub.

The Official Pride ASIA celebration will be on June 21 from noon to 4 p.m. at Hing Hay Park, in Seattle's Chinatown/International District.
