Have kids not cats, Pope says

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Pope Francis warned couples who choose not to have children that they will be bitter and lonely in their old age.

In a June 2 homily, the Pope said that couples should procreate rather than adopting pets.

A worldly 'culture of wellbeing' has 'convinced us it's better not to have children. It's better!' the Pope exclaimed.

'That way you can see the world, go on holidays; you can have a house in the country and be carefree,' he said. 'Maybe it is better, more convenient, to have a little dog, two cats; and the love goes to the two cats and the little dog,' he said.

'Is this true or not? Have you seen it?

'Eventually this marriage gets to old age in solitude, with the bitterness of loneliness. It is not fertile; it does not do what Jesus does with his church: he makes it fertile.'

Fertility is one of the three planks of a successful marriage, the Pope said, along with faithfulness and perseverance.

Francis made the remarks at a special mass for 15 couples, who had been married between 25 and 60 years.

The previous day, the Pope appeared at the Stadio Olimpico football stadium in Rome to tell a rally of 50,000 members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement that Satan is trying to destroy the domestic family.

Families face attacks from the devil 'because Jesus grows in parents' love and children's lives,' the Pope said.

The Pope's remarks came a week after Italy announced a record low birthrate for 2013.
