Eric Cantor out! GOP gets even nastier

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Even the word 'stunning' seems too mild to describe what happened in Virginia's Seventh Congressional District Republican primary on June 10. House Majority leader Eric Cantor was ousted by an unknown college professor, David Brat.

Not only did Brat beat a seven-term incumbent who outspent him 26 to one, he trounced Cantor, winning by 11 points.

While media pundits speculate about why Cantor lost so badly, one thing is clear - Brat represents a new, and very nasty trend in Republican politics.

Cantor was elected Majority Leader in 2011 by his Republican congressional colleagues as a Tea Party guy, the one who was supposed to keep an eye on the 'moderate' Speaker John Boehner. Now Cantor has been outdone by someone even more to the right.

Throughout the campaign, Brat emphasized his Christian faith, even to the point of attributing his primary election victory to God.

While he never spoke publically about Cantor's religion, the effect was to call attention to the fact that Cantor is the GOP's only Jewish Congressman, in fact the only non-Christian Republican in Congress.

The same thing happened with Brat's constant hammering on the issue of immigration reform. Cantor has never been a friend of the country's immigrants, but the fact that he once seemed ready to do a kind-of-sort-of half deal on the DREAM Act gave Brat an opening to paint him as a supporter of 'amnesty' for undocumented immigrants.

Brat's message? Cantor isn't one of 'Us' - the white, Christian, native-born base of the Republican Party.

Brat explicitly played on the social issues dearest to the hearts of the Christian right, promising on his website to 'protect the rights of the unborn and the sanctity of marriage,' and 'oppose any governmental intrusion upon the conscience of people of faith.'

He was endorsed by the worst-of-the worst radio talk show rightists - Dave Beck, Anne Coulter, Laura Ingraham, and Mark Levin. Ingraham even suggested that Eric Cantor should have been the one traded to the Taliban for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

In short, David Brat's upset win in Virginia's Seventh Congressional District reveals a very ugly turn in Republican Party politics.
