Don't support NOM march, California leaders tell SF Archbishop

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

More than 70 California political leaders and organizations have signed a letter to San Francisco's Roman Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, asking him not to support NOM's 2014 March for Marriage.

The event is scheduled to take place June 19 in Washington DC.

Among those urging the Archbishop to stay home are California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, State Senator Mark Leno, State Assembly member Tom Ammiano, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, San Francisco Treasurer Jose Cisneros, and San Francisco Supervisors David Campos and Scott Wiener.

A number of prominent religious leaders also signed the letter, including the Episcopal Bishops of California and Wisconsin; the Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker, Dean of the Cathedral at Sacramento's Trinity Cathedral; Rev. Will McGarvey, Executive Director of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa and Community Presbyterian Church; Rev. Dennis W. Wiley, pastor of the Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ; Rev. Dr. Karen Oliveto Sr., Pastor of Glide Memorial UMC; and Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun Magazine.

'We respect freedom of religion and understand that you oppose civil marriage for same-sex couples,' the letter advises Cordileone.

'Many people of faith who have different opinions on the question of civil marriage for same-sex couples have come together in respectful dialogue and discernment to discuss those differences. Sadly, the actions of NOM and its invited speakers push us farther apart rather than bringing us together.'

The letter refers to NOM's 'long and well-documented history of publishing material that connects homosexuality with pedophilia and incest and falsely suggests that Gays and Lesbians are trying to 'inculcate children.'

The Family Research Council, which is co-sponsoring the event, has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The letter points out that the actions of NOM and several of the invited speakers contradict the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 'which states that Lesbian and Gay people 'must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.'

Former Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is scheduled to speak at the event, as is Fox TV host and Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee.

Cordileone was appointed Archbishop of San Francisco in 2012, by then-Pope Benedict XVI. As Bishop of Oakland, he was one of the architects of Prop 8, the ballot measure that sought to deprive Gay and Lesbian couples of the right to marry.

Cordileone is also one of 17 US Catholic bishops to sign the notorious Manhattan Declaration, calling on Christians to disobey laws safeguarding same-sex marriage and reproductive choice. Other signers include anti-Gay activists like Tony Perkins, and James Dobson.

The Archbishop is noted as an extreme theological conservative who supports the so-called Tridentine Mass, the pre-Vatican II mass said exclusively in Latin. Catholic reformers at the Second Vatican Council jettisoned the Latin mass in order to make Catholic services more accessible to ordinary parishioners.
