Throw Brunei out of TPP talks, women's groups demand

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

A coalition of women's rights groups issued a statement June 9 calling for the Obama Administration to throw the small Asian country of Brunei out of talks on the planned Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The initiative was organized by the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), and joined by eleven other women's rights groups: the American Association of University Women, the Clearinghouse on Women's Issues, the Institute for Science and Human Values, Jewish Women International, National Center for Lesbian Rights, National Council of Jewish Women, the National Organization for Women, the Women's Global Program of the Communications Consortium Media Center, Women's Online Media and Education Network, and the US National Committee for UN Women.

The TPP is a projected free-trade treaty covering the Pacific basin. It would include the US, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.

Brunei's ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bokiah, announced that his country would begin to implement sharia law, which stipulates that women who deny their husbands sex should be flogged, and that Gay people should be executed.

'Women's rights and human rights cannot take a backseat to profit and trade,' said FMF President Eleanor Smeal. 'As a global leader, the United States should not negotiate a free trade agreement with a country that has enacted laws hostile to basic human rights and dignity.

'The US must insist that Brunei address human rights concerns by revoking its penal code before the US continues negotiations with Brunei on the TPP,' continued Smeal. 'There is simply no place in a civilized society for kill-a-gay and flog-a-woman penal codes. Our foreign policy should make that clear, especially in the execution of our trade agreements.'

The Office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights has expressed deep concern about Brunei's new penal code and stated that its draconian punishments would violate international law.

The new penal code, which went into effect on May 1, is set to be implemented in three phases. The first phase includes fines and prison sentences for such 'crimes' as becoming pregnant outside of marriage.

The second phase includes corporal punishment, such as amputations and flogging of women who have abortions.

The third phase includes the stoning to death of Gay men, Lesbians, and individuals convicted of adultery.

In protest, UNITE HERE, the union that represents hotel and food service workers, and a number of Hollywood celebrities have organized a boycott of the Sultan's signature Beverley Hills Hotel. The boycott has reportedly cost the Sultan more than $1.5 million in bookings.

The Sultan's British flagship hotel, the Dorchester in London, is also under boycott.
