Cox, Parsons, Bomer, The Normal Heart in Emmy contention

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Laverne Cox made history this week. The 30 year-old entertainer became the first Transgender person to receive an Emmy acting nomination, singled out for her work on the hit TV show 'Orange is the New Black.' The Netflix series set in a women's prison received 12 nods total, including Outstanding Comedy and three Guest Actress-Comedy slots, which Cox will compete in along with Natasha Lyonne and Uzu Aduba.

Jim Parsons was doubly rewarded on Thursday morning when nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmys were revealed. The openly Gay actor was recognized again in the Outstanding Lead Actor-Comedy category for his role in 'The Big Bang Theory' (he's won three times) and also for Outstanding Supporting Actor-Miniseries or Movie for playing Tommy Boatwright in the TV production of The Normal Heart. He'll face co-star and fellow Gay actor Matt Bomer, who secured his nod for his role as Felix Turner in the HBO film that garnered a whopping 16 nominations total, including a mention for director Ryan Murphy ('American Horror Story,' 'Glee').

A few other members of the LGBT acting community were showered with Emmy love, among them Jesse Tyler Ferguson for Outstanding Supporting Actor-Comedy ('Modern Family'), Jane Lynch for Outstanding Host for Reality/Reality Competition Program ('Hollywood Game Night'), Tim Gunn for Outstanding Host for Reality/Reality Competition Program ('Project Runway') and Nathan Lane for Outstanding Guest Actor-Comedy ('Modern Family').

The Emmy Awards will be televised on Monday, August 25 from Los Angeles.
