Alas our Robin, I knew him well - Remembering Robin Williams

by Sugie - SGN Contributing Writer

What can I say that hasn't already been said about the passing of Robin Williams? He was a standup comedian extraordinaire, not to mention a very good actor, receiving a supporting actor Academy Award for Goodwill Hunting. Robin McLaurin Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois.

His first imitation he ever attempted was of his grandmother to his mother. He went on to Julliard, in New York City. His roommate was Christopher Reeves of Superman fame. Word is that one time, Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve were walking down the street and Robin Williams cracked to his friend, Christopher Reeves, 'Here comes Superman and Mork (of 'Mork and Mindy' fame).

Robin Williams suffered from depression most of his life. Yet, that did not stop him from making his mark on television with 'Mork and Mindy,' which lasted from 1978 to 1982. His list of accomplishments doesn't stop there. He won two Emmy Awards, five Grammy awards, two Screen Actor's Guild awards, and four Golden Globes.

Few people may remember this, but Robin Williams first appeared on television on 'The Richard Pryor Show.' In his 'craft or sullen art' as Dylan Thomas would say, Robin Williams was no stranger to the art of improvisation, which can challenge an actor's deepest thoughts. I have some favorite movies I've seem Robin Williams in - one of them was Mrs. Doubtfire, where he played a newly divorced husband who dressed up as a female housekeeper so he could see his children. Dead Poets Society was another Robin Williams vehicle - where he played a renegade teacher who had his students stand up on their desks to show the strength of their beliefs. Lastly, I must mention Good Morning, Vietnam - another Robin Williams pleaser. He played a disk jockey who followed his conscience, and not his radio playlist.

Everything I write is trying so hard to describe Robin Williams, yet only this Voltaire quote will do - I have taken the liberty of twisting the original words around to describe Robin Williams. This is the quote, 'If there was no God, man would invent one.' This is the Robin Williams' version - 'If there were no comedy, Robin Williams would invent some.'

Happy heavenly travels, Robin Williams. The world has lost a brilliant artist, whose brushstrokes will stay in many minds for a long time.
