Soundgarden, Williams, Grande slated for NFL kickoff in Seattle

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

What do Soundgarden, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande have in common? Nothing really. The lone exception is that all three will perform at CenturyLink Field on September 4 to help kick off the National Football League's 95th season. Grande will sing the National Anthem at the start of the Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers game, while Soundgarden and Williams are each expected to perform free mini sets that same day; some of it will be televised on www.NFL.com. Details are still murky, but I'm working on finalizing the time and exact location of the concerts, so stay glued to The Music Lounge for updates.

Speaking of Seattle bands: Minus the Bear drops a new album on October 7 called Lost Loves. You might recall that in 2012 the local rock act became very involved with Marriage Equality, even performing at the Comet Tavern to raise money and awareness for the campaign. It's so great to have them as LGBT community allies, aside from the fact that they put out great music and occasionally play hometown shows, such as an upcoming concert on November 1 at The Crocodile. The track list for Lost Loves is as follows: 1) 'Electric Rainbow,' 2) 'Surf-N-Turf,' 3) 'Broken China,' 4) 'Walk On Air,' 5) 'Patiently Waiting,' 6) 'Cat Calls & Ill Means,' 7) 'Invented Memory,' 8) 'South Side Life,' 9) 'Your Private Sky,' 10) 'The Lucky Ones.' For ticket information on The Crocodile show, go to www.thecrocodile.com.

Grammy-winning R&B vocalist Lisa Fischer will be my special guest in The Music Lounge on September 19. The famed backup singer, spotlighted in 20 Feet from Stardom, which claimed the Best Documentary Feature award at this year's Oscars, has worked with many artists in the recording studio and on tour, including the Rolling Stones, Patti LaBelle, Sting, Nine Inch Nails and the late Luther Vandross. Fischer called me last week from New Jersey, where she resides, and spoke about her music, upcoming performances in Seattle and collaborating with the Stones, who she'll join again on tour this fall. She is scheduled to appear back-to-back evenings on September 23 and 24 at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, booked for two sets each night, where she'll likely belt out solo favorites, such as 'How Can I Ease the Pain,' and reinterpreted classic covers. All four shows are pre-paid reserved seating, so guests must make reservations beforehand at www.jazzalley.com, or by calling (206) 441-9729. Look for the interview with Lisa Fischer here in The Music Lounge on September 19, and if you haven't seen 20 Feet from Stardom, I highly suggest watching it soon.

On the subject of track listings, Stevie Nicks will also release a new album on October 7 entitled 24 Karat Gold - Songs from the Vault. Among the songs featured on the record is 'The Dealer,' originally recorded for 1979's Tusk LP by Fleetwood Mac, said to be the leadoff single for 24 Karat Gold. No word yet on whether Nicks will include any material from the album on the upcoming Mac tour, which descends on the Tacoma Dome on November 20.

Finally, don't forget that Bumbershoot is just around the corner. This year's musical lineup includes Foster the People, J Cole, Panic! At The Disco, Big Freedia, Neon Trees and Capital Cities, to name a few. For tickets and complete information, visit www.bumbershoot.org.
