Five acts to check out at Bumbershoot

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

BUMBERSHOOT
SEATTLE CENTER
August 30-September 1

If you're staying put this Labor Day Weekend, take note that Bumbershoot is happening three days and nights at Seattle Center with musical acts, comedians, authors, filmmakers, performance artists, and all kinds of food stalls with tempting treats. But if it's the music you're going for, which is the centerpoint of the festival, there's a lot to see and hear just below the Space Needle.

Here are five acts to catch at Bumbershoot. For more info, log onto www.bumbershoot.org.

Panic! At The Disco
Memorial Stadium
Saturday, 2:45 p.m.

Alternative rockers Panic! At The Disco have routinely swept through Seattle on nearly every tour, and they've managed to sell out all of their shows. The band is still promoting last year's recording, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! Frontman Brendon Urie has stated that although he's straight, he's been attracted to other men and has experienced men sexually in the past. They'll be a big draw at Memorial Stadium.

Big Freedia
Fisher Green Stage
Saturday, 2:45 p.m.

New Orleans rapper Big Freedia is as interesting as he is talented. Stating that he's not Transgender, he does wear women's clothes and accessories, and is usually seen clutching a purse. Besides this, he's a well-respected and sought-after interior designer back home. Musically, he's said to be a knockout performer.

Mavis Staples
Starbucks Stage
Saturday, 10 p.m.

The legendary gospel-traditional soul singer returns to Bumbershoot, where she wowed a large gathering of festival-goers three years ago. She's touring in support of 2013's One True Vine, the second album produced by Jeff Tweedy (Wilco); he helmed her Grammy-winning record You Are Not Alone in 2010. Skip church and see Staples instead.

Neon Trees
Fisher Green Stage
Monday, 8 p.m.

Pop-rock band Neon Trees has made waves this year with the release of their third studio album, Pop Psychology, that contains the leadoff hit 'Sleeping with a Friend.' But the Provo, Utah-based group also created headlines throughout the music biz when lead singer Tyler Glenn recently announced he was Gay. They're expected to put on an energetic, fun show. And, look for an SGN interview with Neon Trees in the coming weeks.

Foster the People
Memorial Stadium
Monday, 9:15 p.m.

Grammy-nominated trio Foster the People comes back to Seattle for the second time this year; their first appearance coincided with the Seattle Seahawks advancing to the Super Bowl after beating the 49ers. The Los Angeles three-piece is on the road supporting their sophomore effort Supermodel, which follows 2011's well-received Torches. I've seen Foster the People twice, and they are really good live.
