How to write a novel in one easy lesson

by Sugie - SGN Contributing Writer

Here I sit with a blank faced computer in front of me. It is almost taunting me to spill the china beans on my latest literary project - writing the great American novel! The idea grew slowly in my mental land, when a good friend of mine was reaping the bushels of fruits by writing her own novel! My boyfriend thought that that was a 'novel' idea and gently told me, 'Susan, I believe you could write a book, too!' So, I was in need of a title, for starters. A phrase had been gently cooking in my talking head. The place next to my boyfriend's sofa was where his cat sits. When the cat wasn't there, I would put heaping full dinner plates there until I could balance the plate on my lap. So, the place where I put my dinner plates when the cat wasn't sitting there became known as 'Put it in the Place Where the Cat Sits!' That then became the title of my novel.

Meanwhile, I am nurturing my novel along by writing at least a page and a half a day. I even got my sister, Desperately Seeking Louise to agree to illustrate my novel! In case you are wondering what my novel is going to be about, I won't be 'catty' about it - I will lick my whiskers and enlighten you! It is all about a magical cat named Moody and the Jones family that he has wrapped around his little paw! You see, all one has to do is write a wish on a piece of paper and 'Put it in the Place Where the Cat Sits' and who knows what will happen!

Since my philosophy of life is 'Becoming is superior to being' (Thank you, Descartes!) I try to write in the early morning sun, every morning at 5 a.m. The novel has been growing like a dandelion field waving in the sugar breeze! I am finding that since I have started my novel, for some reason, I can relate to people better, and can grasp more life concepts more easily! I try to put a positive bent on my novel, because there are too many 'Killing of Sister George' novels out there and the least I can do is shake hands with a positive present!

I also take my writing philosophy from a quote from the movie, 'Little Miss Sunshine.' In this movie, one teeny bopper confided to his brilliant, yet mentally disturbed uncle, 'I'll find a way to fly. When you do what you love to do, you can do no wrong!' Like that teeny bopper boy, I am doing what I love to do, and that is write, not wrong! I would like to share a poem I wrote when I was a wee seven year-old. 'Do you want a duck? It will not bring you bad luck! When it talks, 'Quack, quack' It walks, wak, wak! Do you want a duck? It will not bring you bad luck!' And that mes amis, is the essence of living - do what you love the best and success will follow you like a cradle of ripe cherries!
