WORST MUSIC OF 2014

by Albert Rodriguez and Jessica Price - SGN A&E Writers

Yes, there were disappointments in 2014. Many, actually. Here then are our choices for the year's most awful songs, albums, performances, and headlining stories.

1. Songs of Innocence (album) - U2
U2's first studio album in five years was released for free, for a limited time, to anyone with an iTunes account. A great concept ... if it was actually worth listening to. Thanks for nothing, U2! -J. Price

2. 'Fancy' (single) - Iggy Azalea
I don't care if everyone and their dog likes this song, I still think it sounds amateurish. I'm holding out for the real stuff - you listening, Missy Elliott? -A. Rodriguez

3. Lady GaGa at Stubbs BBQ, SXSW Festival (performance)
Lady Gaga started out the year with neon vomit, 'performance art' at SXSW, and things didn't get much better from there. Let's hope the Artpop era is swiftly forgotten and eclipsed by some stronger material, STAT. -J. Price

4. 'Anaconda' (single) - Nicky Minaj
While I loves me a song about trouser snakes, this copy and paste single by Minaj, sampling Sir Mix-a-lot's infectious 1992 hit, is the most annoying thing I listened to in 2014. It's supposed to be fun, though it's actually just tacky. -A. Rodriguez

5. Kanye West at Quantas Credit Union Arena, Sydney (performance)
Yes, Kanye's in our Worst List, AGAIN! Who can forget his recent antics berating an Australian audience to stand up, including a wheelchair-bound fan? -J. Price

6. 'Turn Down for What' (single) - DJ Snake and Lil Jon
In the category of 'this shit passes for music,' you'll find this horribly fused rap-electronic track from two guys who should never be allowed inside a recording studio again. -A. Rodriguez

7. A.K.A. (album) - Jennifer Lopez
J. Lo's eighth album A.K.A. is as lackluster as it's title; just barely redeemed by her appearance with Iggy Azalea at the 2014 AMA's. -J. Price

8. Nick Jonas (album) - Nick Jonas
Despite the fact Nick Jonas is all grown up and sporting a six-pack in crotch-grabbing magazine spreads (Merry Christmas to us!), his self-titled release was a dud. Furthermore, pandering to Gay media and fans for attention seemed desperate; next time do what Sam Smith did, put out a good album. -A. Rodriguez

9. Rolling Stone interview, ESPYs appearance (news/headlines) - Drake
As much as we generally love Drake, throwing a bitchy tantrum over losing your Rolling Stone cover to a deceased Philip Seymour Hoffman (not to mention dissing Seattle's hometown hero Macklemore) is just plain bad manners. -J. Price

10. Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics (album) - Aretha Franklin
If you thought passing a kidney stone was painful, try listening to the Queen of Soul warble her way through 'Rolling in the Deep.' And, I mean no dis-R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but that dress (er, sleeveless curtain) she wore on 'Letterman' should've stayed in storage. -A. Rodriguez
