Evangelicals hate Gays more than they hate Catholics - Form alliance to fight equality

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Anti-Gay evangelicals have lined up with the Whore of Babylon - an old Protestant expression for the Catholic Church, derived from the Biblical Book of Revelations. Their common goal? Stop marriage equality.

An organization called Evangelicals and Catholics Together are set to publish a statement on the 'threat' of same-sex marriage.

The statement, 'The Two Shall Become One Flesh,' is said to be the culmination of three years work. It will be published in the religious journal First Things.

Even while opposing marriage equality, the group's statement concedes that same-sex marriages are becoming the law of the land.

'We must say as clearly as possible, that same-sex unions, even when sanctioned by the state, are not marriages,' the group says. 'Christians who wish to remain faithful to the Scriptures and Christian tradition cannot embrace this falsification of reality, irrespective of its status in law.'

Evangelicals and Catholics Together was founded in 1994 by ex-Nixon staffer Chuck Colson and Lutheran pastor turned Catholic priest Richard John Neuhaus. First Things is a religious journal formerly edited by Neuhaus.

Colson got religion while doing time in a federal prison for obstruction of justice in the Pentagon Papers case. Neuhaus was a close advisor to President George W. Bush. Both were heavily influenced by Frank Schaeffer's Christian Manifesto published in 1981.

Their group glossed over the clear differences in evangelical and Catholic doctrine in favor of faith-based right-wing politics, a commitment that continues to be evident in their latest pronouncement.

'The revolution in our marriage and family law, already well advanced, marches under the banners of freedom and equality,' the document says. 'But these noble ideals are here gravely misapplied.

'When society systematically denies the difference between male and female in law and custom, our fundamental dignity is diminished, the image of God within us is obscured, unreality becomes legally established, and those who refuse to conform are regarded as irrational bigots.

'We owe our fellow citizens a socially engaged witness to the truth about marriage, which, with the family, is the unalterable foundation of a healthy, humane society.'

Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School said evangelicals and Catholics had put aside their theological differences because of the urgency of the marriage issue.

'Catholics and evangelicals continue to disagree on lots and lots of issues,' he said. 'And the people who drafted this statement are well aware of those differences. We have not smudged them or pushed them under the rug.

'We felt we had to speak out on this issue.'
