Seattle Counseling Service LGBTQI Undocumented Immigrant and Refugee Research and Outreach Project

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Seattle Counseling Service (SCS) recently launched its LGBTQI Undocumented Immigrant and Refugee Research and Outreach Project. Jacque Larrainzar recently joined SCS staff as Outreach Specialist for the project and was highlighted in the organizations monthly newsletter to donors and supporters.

'I am very proud to be part of a brand new project at SCS: The Undocumented Immigrant and Refugee Research and Outreach Project - UIRO, for short,' Larrainzar said. 'My job is to gather the stories of LGBTQI undocumented Immigrant and Refugees, uncover the barriers they face to accessing behavioral health services and then create recommendations to address those needs.'

'It is amazing to me that there is only one needs assessment on the subject, conducted by the Williams Institute and the University of Arizona,' she said. 'I think it is very exciting to see an agency like SCS take on the challenge to serve everyone in the LGBTQI community. I am sure there will be support and funding to implement a program that will address the needs of this community in 2016.'

In 1997, Larrainzar was the first Lesbian from Mexico to win political asylum based on sexual orientation. It took her 20 years to become a U.S. citizen and the journey was very hard and painful at times she said, 'But it has also been full of wonders.'

'I am very happy to have had the opportunity to work for the City of Seattle for 14 years on policy and education issues related to the LGBTQ community, Immigrants, women, race and social justice,' said Larrainzar. 'I have a Bachelors in Science with a specialty in music therapy and person centered counseling as well as other degrees related to public policy, administration and social media and engagement. I am a queer activist in love with the people in my community.'

'I am looking forward to helping give voice and visibility to the stories of LGBTQI undocumented immigrants and refugees who are part of the LGBTQI community in Seattle,' she concluded. 'I cannot wait to meet with folks, share stories and find ways in which we can support each other to live our lives to their fullest. I am also excited to learn about what local agencies are doing for LGBTQI undocumented immigrants and refugees and how gaps in services can be addressed through collaboration and partnerships.'
