Anti-Gay graffiti appears on Capitol Hill

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Equal Rights Washington Executive Director Monisha Harrell noticed something disturbing Monday morning. Anti-Gay slurs were tagged onto the wall of the parking garage, owned by First Covenant Church, on Summit between E. Pike and E. Pine Sts., on Capitol Hill. The word 'faggot' and the phrase 'I see gay people' was visible, having been tagged in red letters, to anyone passing by.

Harrell, a supporter of Seattle Police Department's SAFE PLACE initiative, photographed the anti-Gay graffiti and contacted SPD LGBTQ Liaison Officer Jim Ritter to report the incident.

Ritter told Seattle Gay News that he and several patrol officers responded to the incident after alerting East Precinct Commander Captain Paul McDonagh of the complaint.

Ritter says that the building 'appears to have been tagged last night by the same suspect who had a very distinctive 'tag,' insinuating that this is not the first time East Precinct officers have seen this particular slur graffitied to a wall belonging to a Capitol Hill business or residence.

'East Precinct patrol officers did a great job photographing the scene and documenting the incident,' said Ritter. 'The Church's maintenance supervisor responded immediately and painted over the graffiti following the police investigation.'
