Doe Bay Fest sells out again in its 8th year

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

DOE BAY FEST
ORCAS ISLAND
August 6-10

Who won't be going to the Taylor Swift concert on Saturday night? About 1,000 guys and gals headed the opposite direction, the San Juan Islands, for the 8th annual Doe Bay Fest, a 4-day event that includes live music, food, drinks, and camping in a laid-back, natural environment. What began as a tiny gathering in 2008 has now expanded to one of summer's most anticipated festivals in the Pacific Northwest that sells out almost instantaneously, including the 2015 installment happening this weekend.

The lineup features lots of regional talent that spans multiple genres, though all of them fall under the indie category. Kris Orlowski (who interviewed with Seattle Gay News in 2014), Champagne Champagne, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Hobosexual, Motopony, Ballroom Thieves, Isaac Pierce, The Local Strangers, Polyrhythmics, and Avers are some of the artists who will entertain the hundreds of festivalgoers at the Doe Bay Resort and Retreat on Orcas Island. Many of the attendees stay at the resort, which offers a variety of accommodations, such as cabins, houses, yurts, domes, and campsite ground that come with access to an on-site waterfront cafe that utilizes ingredients from its own Doe Bay Organic Garden. A yoga studio, soaking tubs and sauna, massage treatments, fire ring, community lodge (Otter Lodge), and general store are all available on the premises for guests and visitors. Others stay at nearby campsites as well, and those living on the island will commute to the resort daily from their homes.

Musical performances, taking place on two stages, plus the yoga studio, start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 10:45 p.m. (11:45 p.m. on Saturday). An open mic session that ran late into Thursday evening kicked off the festival. If there are any cancellations for this weekend's event, they will be posted at doebay.com. Getting to Orcas Island from Seattle can be done by ferry, plane, or car + ferry; visitsanjuanislands.com has detailed information on traveling to the San Juan Islands. Those interested in going to Doe Bay Fest next year should check the festival website early in 2016 for ticket sale information.
